Help with Sanford hotel/airport/car UGGH!!!

Hi- I felt very prepared. We are going away this April and just added a mini-trip to WDW. Yahoo! WDW stuff booked, air booked, rest of trip booked. NOw I realize our flight leaves out of Sanford at 7:40 AM on a Sunday AM. Actually, I knew that, but what I didn't know, is that none of the car rental agencies have return times early enough so we can drop off our car in the AM before we go (have to be checked in NO later than 6:30). If we drop the car off the night before, no hotel offers a shuttle before 6:30, so we wouldn't make it. What to do? Are taxis my only option? We'd need two because there are 7 of us--also, my FIL will need a wheelchair. I am just glad I realized this now and not a week before we go. I am sure it will all work out, but it is the last piece of the puzzle, and I NEED it to fit. Any ideas?? Thanks!

I live very close to Sanford Airport. I don't know the technicalities of the hotels near their because I have never flown out of there.

But, I wanted to let you know that it is pretty close to WDW. Less than an hours drive (depending on I-4 traffic).

Have you checked with one of the agencies to see if you can drop it off after hours? We have done this before without any problems.

You won't be able to drop it off after hours. The rental offices are in a separate building that will be locked and the area to drop the car in will be gated.

We had HUGE problems with the one and only time we flew into Sanford. We had to go to an off-site rental location for Hertz, have the guy come from his home and open it up for us. It was a complete and total nightmare.

Even if you drop it off at the off-site location, how would you get to the airport? There are very few taxi companies in Sanford. There are some nice hotels in the Sanford area.

I am sorry that I have no more help to lend. I have learned that the bucks you save flying into Sanford are soooo not worth it in the end. Until they make this airport more flyer friendly it is going to be a nightmare for all. Make sure you double and triple check with the rental company on how to handle this - make sure that you call and talk to someone at a taxi company and get phone numbers for emergencies.

Don't panic - at least you are thinking this through now and not like us, when you got in. Well, it wasn't our fault, but we were completely uprepared for what the situation would be.

I actually can't believe that there could be flights coming in prior to the rental car counters being open - that is just not right. There should be coordination between the rental companies and the flights - call down there and check to make sure they don't open special for an early flight. They do open special for charters - so they may be doing it for the flight.

I just looked at your location - you must be flying out of Worcester, hunh? I just had some friends do it and they said it all went fine. I will ask how they handled their rental cars. I am from Worcester and know the airport director, so I can also ask him how most people are handling the flights leaving so early and rental cars. Hopefully he would know.

We flew Pan Am - on the way down our engine fell off - yup! That's right, the thing fell off! We had to make an emergency landing in Norfolk, VA - they had no cooperation agreement with that airport so we sat with the emergency vehicles surrounding the plane for three hours until we were allowed to come into the airport and sit and wait for their Manchester flight that they wold divert to come pick us up - full of passengers I might add.

By the time we got into Sanford it was 1 am - we were supposed to be in at 1 pm. The airport closes at midnight. We were shoved out of the terminal out onto the street. The rental locations were closed, there were no taxis and when we called some companies in the phone book, they were all closed. We had reservations down in WDW for that night.

A very, very good samaritan took us in their minivan to the nearest hotel that had only one room left because it was Daytona week. We slept there to wait for the rental off-site location to open at 8 am. When 8:30 am rolled around we went through hundreds of phone calls to get to the point where we were calling in the owner of the franchise to come from home to come open the door of the office - he wasn't coming in because he didn't know that anyone was renting that morning.

There are two things to keep in mind if you are flying out of Worcester:

1) There is a chance that your flight may be delayed on the way down, and a chance that you may be rerouted to Providence on either leg.
2) Sanford is not a big airport. It was mainly used for European charters and is trying to build up its business beyond that.

Make sure you call to all companies and check on what you should be doing. Allegiant has been flying now for a few months - they must have this worked out. I have heard nothing bad about any of the flights - some have been re-routed to Providence, but that is it.

Make sure you have plans and back up plans for what to do.

(oh and I know so much about the background of the airport and the fact that John Travolta keeps his jet there, because we were delayed by four hours leaving out of Florida to come back home).

All this being said, I am contemplating flying Allegiant for an upcoming business trip because of its convenience. But that will just be me in case something goes wrong or there are delays and I need to be in Sanford proper for the meetings.

Yes, we are from MA (Pepperell). Lovely weather yesterday huh? We spent 2 1/2 hours with a battery back up, and then a portable generator pumping our sump pump drain into lobster pots and carrying it up out of our cellar to dump it. Fun fun! Tomorrow I head to Home Depot to get an automatic sump back up. Oh well...time to stop rambling....
Thanks for your info. I had already checked out a lot of them on the SFB site. I had pretty much exhausted the idea of a paid limo or taxi because of the cost issue. We did discover that Alamo has an after hours drop off. Leave the car in the area and leave the keys in the box. I'd love to find someone who did this. I am a bit concerned about the walk from the drop off area to to terminal. The rental drop areas are not noted on the terminal map. I e-mailed the airport to ask, but haven't heard. I plan to call Alamo direct today to find out. As far as Allegiant-I emailed them and got a response that said they would get back to me in a week or 2. I tried the 800 # and kept getting bumped off because they were so busy. That was a bit annoying, to say the least. Then the power went out and I forgot all about our vacation LOL.
Anyhoo--we are scheduled to arrive in SFB at 2:00. I hope we make it there with all our engines (I don't think I could get on a plane again if that happened to me ). We will cross our fingers and hope for the best. If it all works out, we will fly Allegiant again, if not, it will be back to flying from Manchester.
Any ideas for a nice hotel? We were thinking SpringHill Suites or Holiday Inn Express.....

We stayed at the Holiday Inn Express and it was the nicest thing about that little incident. The person who dropped us off was a friend with the manager so they found us a room for the night even though the 800 number said they were booked up. We really liked the room and the breakfast was very nice - as are all Spinghill and Holiday Inn Express breakfasts. It was new at the time, so its now realitively new. I think I am going to request to stay there for work again because it was nice.

I asked my friend about what they did with their rental car and she told me they took the later afternoon flight back home. BUT she did say that they took the morning flight down and the web site said that the rental counter would not be open and it was open for their flight. She was very thankful for that. She really stressed that she liked the flight - it was easy, and she had no problems.

As for flying again - let's just say I didn't rack up any frequent flyer miles with Pan Am after that - and to top it off we were on the flight because my husband was a Chamber of Commerce exec - after that he had a lot of trouble recommending flying out of Worcester. We are very excited to have flights back again and now really want Allegiant to do well so hopefully the Sanford airport works to support these flights and we will try to do the same to support the flights out of Worcester. Remember, Allegiant planes are new - Pan Am uses the old Eastern Airlines planes - and the owner of Pan Am is known for shoddy maintenance on his trains and his planes - so I would say that any airline is bound to be MUCH better than Pan Am was at that time. I knew this getting on, but we were on an ambassador flight showing our support for the airline being in Worcester. yeah, that went well.....

Oh, and I work in Natick and they recorded a 95 mile per hour gust over in Wayland, about 5 miles from me yesterday! I went to go get gas at lunch time and turned right back around - we lost power three times here at our offices.

Thanks. I think we will book the Holiday Inn express. We have always had good luck with them.
As far as Worcester goes, I hope they succeed too. It's nice to have an other option than Manchester. I wouldn't fly out of Logan if at all possible--too busy for my liking.
One more ? about Worcester--how's the parking?

I really like parking in Worcester. You park in a lot right in front of the terminal, but its a little lower - so you have to take stairs or an elevator to get to the same elevation as the terminal - its all outside, no decks.

There was a lot of controversy about charging for parking or making it free - I think they came down to charging as a way to attract the airlines with a potential revenue stream. But the charge is very minimal. I will try and gt more info.

I think I read that it's $6/day. Not bad at all. Is there ample parking? We leave the Friday before April vacation. I'd hate to get there and have nowhere to park.

Um, well, I have never seen it full.... It's only Allegiant flying out of there right now. I can't imagine it filling up over capacity for one flight. Its a small lot, though. But they do have overflow which is not any further to go - its beside the building. I have flown out of there when there were three different carriers and on a vacation week and we didn't have any problems finding a spot.

I think you can rest assured that you will find a place to park. If not, you can use my driveway and we will bring you up - I live in Tatnuck at the bottom of the hill as you go to the airport. I can see it from my house.
