Help with organizing photos

I'm in the organizing mode and I found a box under the bed that had photos in it that I had totally forgotten about.

So, I decided to organize and I'm perplexed as to the best way.

Do you organize chronilogically, by event, or by the person? I'm also sorting photos to give to my daughters at the same time. Plus, I was really bad and many of the photos aren't dated and don't have the location or event.

It seemed simple at first but I'm already overwhelmed!

Help please with any photo organizing tips!

I have two CM power sort boxes for my pictures. I go by year for pictures of DH, DD, and I since we've been together. Before that DH and I each have a tab for early pictures.

For other members in the family, (I do genealogy) I have tabbed sections for that family, ie mother's maiden name, her mother's maiden name, etc

Well... I am a ANAL about doing things chronologically. So you know my answer.....

I sort first chronologically and then since I usually order double prints, next I sort into two chronological piles (one for each child). I use a simple envelope system to keep my photos in order. I bought a cheap box of white envelopes and I divide the photos by event and/or day and then stand up the envelopes in chronological order in a basic photo storage box. I write the date and event and the child's name on the front the envelope. When I am getting ready to scrap them, I divide the photos by layout and include the sketch and other ideas for the pages along with the photos. When I am ready to sit down and scrap I have everything I need!

I also scrap chronologically. I occasionally will do an event or two out of order, but it kind of makes me crazy, so I generally stick to doing things STRICTLY chronologically.

If the photos aren't dated and you aren't sure, you may have to get some help from others.... ask your kids/spouse/cousins to look at the photos and help you out...............P

mostly chronologically but then each of us have a slot for over flow like extra school pics.

Thanks for sharing your methods. The photos spread over my craft room floor looked so overwhelming and such a mess that I wanted to put them back in the box but I didn't give in.

I'll have to check out the CM power sorter or try some kind of envelope system. Some of them are in a loose chronological order and luckily I have about 8 years of photos in albums so those are already in order. I also have older photos from my grandmother that I want to scan and share with my siblings.
