My wife, myself and our two little ones are booked on the Disney Magic out of NY on Nov 26th. Due to it being the Thanksgiving Holiday, flying in on Sunday is ridiculously expensive and Saturday only slightly less ridiculous. From looking at fares, it seems that my best bet will be to fly in either on Thanksgiving or the day after, meaning we will have to stay in NY for a couple/few nights prior to heading to the port. After looking at prices for hotel rooms close to the port I had to pick my jaw up off the floor. I'm wondering if anyone can give me some advice on where to find a decent, but not stupidly expensive hotel room within a reasonable area for transportation purposes? By reasonable, I mean, not somewhere that's 2 hours away. We don't need to be in Manhattan, but public transport to Manhattan would be a plus since we will have some time to kill while we wait to cruise.

Usually when we travel, I figure around $125-150/night is reasonable. When looking in Manhattan, I'm not seeing anything less than $300/night, or at least anything that is rated decently.

Look right across the river in Weehawken or Jersey city. There is a ferry that takes you right to the West side of Manhattan. Also, the ferry terminal on the West Side is just a very short walk to the cruise pier. There are also buses that are included with your ferry ticket that takes you to many places in the City. You would want the Port Imperial Ferry on the West side.

Cruiser21: We are flying in from Denver and neither of us have been to NY before, so know next to nothing.

mmouse37: Ah, thank you! I will give that a look.

I'm not sure about any current rates but when we sailed out of NY we stayed at the Broadway at Times Square hotel for a few days before. It was the most affordable I could find at the time and very convenient to many tourist spots. It was a tiny room but it was clean and I felt safe, so it served it's purpose.

Did you check into flying into Newark, NJ (EWR)? There are lots of hotel options out there. Newark Airports very close to NYC?
There is something called AirTrain that you can't take that connects with trains to NYC. It's maybe 40 minutes.
The main train station in NYC is Penn Station, which is below Madison Square Garden. You can also take a from Newark to Hoboken and take ferry across to west side of Manhattan.

There are 9-10 hotels wishing a 1.5 miles of the Airport. The rates are usually pretty good, but you are traveling during the holidays. So, I am sure everything will be busy and expensive.

You can also look in Brooklyn or Queens. You would be a subway ride from Manhattan.

DH and I will be cruising out of NYC in early October, but we live only an hour away in NJ. Luckily, my husbands law office is in Brooklyn. We are parking there and taking the subway in, traffic is horrendous around the City.

Good Luck.

Sorry about the spell check errors above.

You can take a train from Newark Liberty to Hoboken than take ferry across to west side of Manhattan.

9-10 hotels within 1.5 of airport. Lol

AirTran from Newark is like 25 tops. With that said the general Newark area is not safe.

Have you considered using a service like Airbnb or home away? Often you can find a nice apartment for less than a hotel room, with more comfortable accommodations, and nicer for a family traveling with children.

Look into NJ (weehawken, Hoboken, jersey city). Easy train ride, or ferry ride, to the west side of Manhattan. If you take a cab they don't run the meter bc it's interstate and what should cost $15 will cost $45 bc they can charge whatever they want.

Also look into queens. If you fly into jfk it will be easy. There's also the airtrain that brings you from jfk to the lirr (and subways) into the city. If you stay in queens you can take the lirr or subway into Manhattan. Then walk or quick cab to the pier.

Airbnb is mostly illegal in NY. I'm not sure of Jersey's laws but in NY the host has to be actually staying where they are renting and it can not be am apartment building. The city is cracking down and some air bnbers have been left with no room due to it.

Definitely check New Jersey for hotel rates. We've stayed in various north Jersey hotels for very reasonable rates.

Another option, if you are coming in a few days early anyway, look at airfares into PHL. It's a fairly easy train ride to NYC, and you should have options with either Amtrak or New Jersey Transit. I don't know if it would be any cheaper but worth looking into.

Enjoy your cruise!

I guess that's the cheapest Disney cruise that week just not the cheapest place to cruise out of. I considered the New York Canadian cruise, but was discouraged by hotel prices. I'm cruising out of Vancouver instead. It's a little better then New York, but not by much. If I ever cruise out of New York I would like to spend 3 or 4 days sightseeing. If you find anything reasonable let us know.
Came back to edit. Totally forgot I booked the TA next year. I guess I will be going to New York. I've only stayed at airport hotels by JFK so if you do find anything great. Please do share.

$100-$125 in NYC is not going to happen. That said I've stayed at nice hotels for $250ish. But that's also one of the busiest weekends in NYC so you're going to pay a premium.

If you search old threads about cruising from NY there is an often mentioned hotel in NJ (Jersey city maybe) that will provide transport to the port.

Another option is Long Island. If you're flying SW check into Flying into LI MacArthur airport. You can get a shuttle from ther to the Long Island rail road (and it's about an hour and twenty minute ride into Manhattan). I can't say what hotels are super close to the train stations, though.

I'm on the cruise over thanksgiving so returning the day you board!

You could also book a refundable room and then check priceline or expedia right before your cancelation period to see if anything closer to Manhattan opens up in your price range. I've stayed at Parc Central with little notice for 90 a night but that was knowing I had a back up plan.

I apologize if I gave bad information. I've used Home Away accommodations four separate times in New York City and did not realize it was illegal. Is this a new law? Twice when I used the service it was because I was in New York for a conference, where the conference organizers recommended using one of the rental services.

Not really new it was always illegal but I believe they recently closed loop holes. Rentals of less then 30 days have always been illegal in NY unless you are renting just a room and not the entire apartment so i.e. A family could rent out their basement or a spare bedroom but not a detached apartment since they would typically live where they are renting.

People still post and rent of course but doesn't make it legal. I believe listing is a 700 fine now if caught and yes you can be evicted for it.

Check Groupon for cheaper hotel rates in NYC or the surrounding area. I second the person who said NOT to stay in Newark. Definitely not a nice or overly safe place to be.
