Help with New York

My wife, myself and our two little ones are booked on the Disney Magic out of NY on Nov 26th. Due to it being the Thanksgiving Holiday, flying in on Sunday is ridiculously expensive and Saturday only slightly less ridiculous. From looking at fares, it seems that my best bet will be to fly in either on Thanksgiving or the day after, meaning we will have to stay in NY for a couple/few nights prior to heading to the port. After looking at prices for hotel rooms close to the port I had to pick my jaw up off the floor. I'm wondering if anyone can give me some advice on where to find a decent, but not stupidly expensive hotel room within a reasonable area for transportation purposes? By reasonable, I mean, not somewhere that's 2 hours away. We don't need to be in Manhattan, but public transport to Manhattan would be a plus since we will have some time to kill while we wait to cruise.
Have you looked into St. Marks Hotel on St. Marks and 3rd Avenue? You can take public transportation to the port and you might be able to get a good rate. Fun neighborhood!

Not really new it was always illegal but I believe they recently closed loop holes. Rentals of less then 30 days have always been illegal in NY unless you are renting just a room and not the entire apartment so i.e. A family could rent out their basement or a spare bedroom but not a detached apartment since they would typically live where they are renting.

People still post and rent of course but doesn't make it legal. I believe listing is a 700 fine now if caught and yes you can be evicted for it.
Why is it illegal?

Wow, thanks for all the good info from everyone. Initially last night, I booked us at the Hampton Inn next to Newark Airport, as it was only $130/night. After catching up on this thread, I cancelled that reservation. I didn't realize Newark was that bad! Thanks for the heads up!

Currently, I have a reservation at the Sheraton Lincoln Harbor in Weehawken. It came in at $214/night with a free breakfast. Location wise, it's excellent. The price is a bit higher than I hoped for, but I'm slowly coming to the realization that NY is expensive, especially over the holiday weekend.

I very much appreciate the advice from everyone here. I'm going to continue looking at the suggestions and continue exploring what's available. Fortunately, I have a room at this point just in case I don't find anything better. Right now, I'm attempting to wrap my head around the various public transportation options in the area.

Keep checking as it gets closer. It's really far out to get good hotel rates anywhere. Also try last minute travel club and orbitz. If you book direct having a triple A card can yield some better rates.

While generally I agree, I'm frankly impressed they found anything even as close as Weehawken for as low as that price even "this far out" as Thanksgiving weekend the city is pretty much at capacity. I would not count on finding cheaper rates closer to the time in this case.

Also just as a note to the OP, if you're thinking of flying out of LaGuardia after the cruise, schedule your flight for the EVENING and plan to start heading there as soon as you're off the ship. They are finally trying to bring it into the 20th Century (21st would be way too much of a stretch at this point) and it has literally been taking hours to get there and people have in some cases given up on their car service and have been walking up to a mile with their stuff. And given that for at least the AirTrain they are using the same company responsible for the 2nd Ave subway which has been underway for a LONG time over schedule and has all of 5 stations finally open, I'm not seeing this clearing up any time soon.

Thanks for this info. Fortunately, it's a one way cruise to San Juan, Puerto Rico, so we'll be flying home from there.

Good choice!!! The ferry is right outside the hotel door!!! I stayed there one night when the Fantasy was coming into New York. The views of Manhattan skyline at night are breathtaking from there!!! The ferry is not cheap but it is very convenient and the walk to the port is not very far from the ferry terminal. The Intrepid Air/Space Museum is right next to the cruise port and well worth a visit if you have extra time.

They have AAA rates usually.
