Help with my DVC Vero Beach trip

This will be my first time visiting the Vero Beach resort (October 2010) and I'm finding mixed reviews online. Can anyone offer some advice on where to eat or if we should have a car, is there enough to do on property or should we look into area attractions, is the character breakfast any good, do they really charge $30/day for beach chairs? Looking for any advice/input that prior visitors can share. Thanks!
