Two nights ago my dog came in the house with a visible bleeding scratch on his nose by his eye.:sad1: I have been cleaning it with a cotton swab and hydrogen peroxide and then putting neosporen on it. If I have to take him to the vet I will but I am trying to avoid another bill here. Am I putting the right stuff on it? Is there anything else I can do? What are signs of infection? It's not infected yet. Poor dog.

Aww poor baby. This site should be helpful.

When in doubt take him to the Vet.

My dog got in a fight with a raccoon and had her nose scratched as well as a cut inside her mouth. I cleaned it with soap and water and then peroxide. I did that numerous times over the course of a few days. It all healed and she is fine now. She is also up to date with all her shots.

It would be like OUR skin... red around the wound, tender to the touch, whitish on the actual wound, etc.

Our dog used to get scratches all the time. He was a little... wild. They like to lick them clean (of course, on the face, your dog can't) when they can reach them. Since your dog can't, I believe you are keeping it clean for him!

I wouldn't take him in unless he is in REAL pain or it looks bad.

Hydrogen peroxide is not a very good antiseptic & inhibits healing, so I would stop that. Just use some warm water & a little antibacterial soap. Neosporin is fine, use it 2-3 times a day for a few days.

It's ok just to monitor the wound for now. Watch for redness, swelling, pain or discharge. If noted, then the wound is infected & he will need to be checked by the vet.

Hope he does ok!
