I hope y'all can help me out. My niece just found out she is pregnant with her first baby and the morning sickness is really bad. I had bad morning sickness with both of mine but that's been a long time ago and I'm sure there's new remedies that I don't know about.

Does anyone have any advice about what I can tell her to help her out? She doesn't go to the doctor until next Thursday (first visit) and I'm worried about her dehydrating because she can't keep anything down. Thanks for your help!

Heather

My doctor had me take 1/2 Unisom before bed. I was so sick I did become dehydrated. I lost 15 pounds in my first trimester. I would, however, talk to the doctor before I did that. I was a special case--I had to be given IV fluids.

ETA: Bubble gum also helped me.

If she's vomiting several times a day and can't keep down food or water, I'd place a call to the OB's office and see if they can get her in sooner. I had morning sickness for 13 weeks with my current pregnancy, and the only thing that helped was the Zofran prescription. :( I'm sorry your niece is feeling so rotten, I hope things get better for her soon. Puking is no fun.

I think it really depends - for each of my pregnancy something different worked! My last lemonade and lemon jelly belly's helped -

and of course keeping soda crackers and water on the bedstand is a must! When you first open your eyes - grab a soda cracker -

but like pp said - there is medications to help - it just really depends!

Thanks, guys. I know I was on a prescription with my last baby about 12 years ago but I was sure they had changed since then. I told my nephew that this morning when he called to ask for help. I also suggested he get her in now if at all possible to see what the doctor says.

She's tried the crackers, the gingerale, ginger candy, so far, no luck with any of it. It's morning sickness morning, noon, and night. He said she was up all last night sick. She lives in another state from me. I so wish I was closer so I could help out.

All that aside, I'm so very excited about this baby :cloud9:. She's my oldest niece and the first one to have a baby and I'm the only one they told so far because they don't know what to do.

My OB/GYN had me wear Sea Bands throughout the day and take a B6 tablet and 1/2 tablet of Unisom together before bed. That worked for me.

Oh I really feel for this girl  I was terribly sick with both of mine for the entire pregnancy...both times had to get IV's I was so dehydrated - my only advice is to drink as much water as she can, once your dehydrated it makes the morning sickness worse...never let yourself go hungry - again makes it worse, crackers (saltines) helped a little....I tried everythign while I was pregnant and found that usually sleeping it off helped the most. Sorry couldn't be more help, but I do feel for her...

I don't actually get sick but my nausea is so bad that I wish I would get sick. Mine starts around Noon and gets worse until I give up and go to bed.

I take 1 full Unisom and 50mg B6 at bedtime and then 1/2 Unisom and 25mg B6 at noon. It's the only thing that helps.

If I couldn't keep anything down I don't know what I would do. An empty stomach makes it worse. I can't let myself get hungry. I need to eat and drink. At this point she just needs to get down anything that will stay down. Don't worry about nutrition right now. Is she still taking her vitamins? My doctor said I could stop taking them for a little while if they were making the nausea worse. She can take a flinestone or two in place of the prenatals. The Prenatals have a lot of iron in them that can make MS worse.

You said she just found out, how far along is she?

**Ice water with lots of fresh lemon
**ginger tea - pour boiling water over some fresh ginger
**I lived on those freezer pops a few weeks ago. The plastic ones ...
**Watermelon
**I don't know where she lives but heat and humidity can make it worse too ... if it's still warm there make sure she is relaxing in air conditioning.

Good LUck ... I hope she feels better. I am actually feeling worse this week than past weeks but hopefully it will pass soon.

DMickey28,

She just found out about a week ago, so not very far along at all. She takes after me and her mom and our other sister. All three of us had horrible morning sickness with all our pregnancies. She lives in Alabama, so yes, still hot. Her poor husband is just beside himself with worry. I've told him he has to get her to eat something, anything.

I have to ask, what does the Unisom do? I've seen several people post about taking that. I know she'll need to ask her doctor, but I can pass that along to them.

Thanks for all the help,
Heather

You may also have heard of Bendectin, which combines an antihistamine called doxylamine with vitamin B6. This drug was once widely used in the United States to treat morning sickness, but controversy over its safety during pregnancy — despite any scientific evidence that it was harmful — forced the manufacturer to pull it from the market. (These days, it's available only in Canada under the name Dicletin.)

The FDA has now classified the combination of ingredients in Bendectin as "safe and effective for nausea and vomiting of pregnancy," and you can buy both ingredients separately over the counter. Doxylamine is available as a sleeping pill under the brand name Unisom Nighttime Sleep-Aid. (Be sure not to get Maximum Strength Unisom SleepGels — that's a different product.) And you can find vitamin B6 in the vitamin section.

Congrats on the new (future) addition to your family!!!!

Mickeylove2, thanks for the info. I'll be sure to pass that along.

I ate. Mostly soda crackers. Ginger Ale helped too. I would sip it. Only was sick w/ DS. Every morning. With DD, not even once. Strange.

A friend of mine ate Nilla wafers.

I also had severe morning sickness with my pregnancies. I had to get IV hydration several times. I was throwing up more than 20 times a day. It was awful.

With my last pregnancy my doctor prescribed Zofran. It was the only thing that worked. It didn't take away my nausea, but it did get my vomitting down to once or twice a day. The only problem with it (for me, anyway) is it caused really bad constipation.

Thanks so much for all the suggestions. I'll be phoning her husband tonight and giving him this great list for them to check out with their doctor.

What worked for me was:

1. After 4 months of bad MS, an older lady coworker gave me thist suggsestion: Start off the day with animal protein. I had to have eggs/yogurt/milk/sausage/bacon in some combination or I'd vomit all day long. Nothing else worked. Adding fruit to the mix negated the whole thing.

2. Making sure my stomach never got empty.

3. Having an animal protein at every meal.

I didn't take any meds, but had a friend who had to take something because she was constantly sick and dehydrated. If it's just a typical case, like both of mine were, I just kept eating and drinking, never having an empty stomach. 5-6 small meals instead of 3 big ones.

Try lots of little snacks (pretzles, crackers, plain noodles, plain turkey sandwiches, bagels, dry cereal, plain oatmeal). I bought a few boxes of cereal to keep at my desk and would just have a handful here and there during the day. Golden Grahams were good and rice Chex too.

I had severe HG with all of my pregnancies (see my signature...there is a blinkie there with information about HG).

I had to inject myself with 3 different medications every day. I had an IV at home. I was hospitalized many times because of dehydration.

I took Zofran, Compazine, and Phenergan. Each had their own fun side effects. :sad1: But, it kept the puking down to 3-5x a day, which was an
improvement.

Mine lasted until I delivered.

You could also visit www.helpher.org for more information about HG and how to help someone with it.

Good luck and congrats to your family on the new addition.

First of all, congratulations to your family!

Things that worked for me:
Sea bands - these are for motion sickness, but they worked for me.
Saltine crackers
Ovaltine - I know this sounds strange, but I would drink milk w/ovaltine & it worked.

My friend swears by making little balls out of bread & then eating them. It never helped me, but she lived on this for months.

I hope the morning (all day) sickness stops soon.
