Hello! My DS12 is taking French for the first time this year. The directions for his worksheet are all in French and we cannot figure it out! So please, can someone translate? I tried on the internet, but our country blocks most of those sites, for some reason! Thanks so much!

1. Entoure les mots francais! Il y en a combien?

(this is followed by a list of words, sort of scattered. we can translate the words.)

2. Fais des recherches et ecris six autres mots d'origine francaise utilises dans ta langue!
(this is followed by 6 blank lines)

3.Retrouve des mots de la page 4 du livre et ecris-les!
(followed by 4 words, possibly scrambled french words?)

TIA for your help!
Katy

The first line is: “The Germans are coming! We must surrender!”

The second line is: “That pretty researcher is six feet tall and speaks in the original French tongue”.

The third line: “Retreat! Back to page four of the book! Sacre bleu!”

I hope this helps.

;)

My DS12 says, LOL. That's funny, but it doesn't help us. ;)

Thanks anyway, you made us laugh!

I did this with Google translator (and my itty-bitty knowledge of French):

http://translate.google.com/******#

1. Surround the French words. How many are there? (Maybe that means circle the words that are in French?)

2. Do some research and write six words of French origin used in your language!

3. Find the words on page 4 of the book and write them.

Sorry I can't be of more help.

Long time since I did French, but my best guess is

1. Entoure les mots francais! Il y en a combien?
Dunno what entoure is, but the rest is .... the French words. How many are there?

(this is followed by a list of words, sort of scattered. we can translate the words.)

Find these words on page 4 of your text book and write them!

I think....like I say - a long time (30 years) since I did any French!

Entoure is "circle". The first direction is: Circle the French words. How many are there?

Time to invest in a copy of Cassell's, I think. Can you access iGoogle? There is a translator available as part of it.

Ah, I see my mistake. I saw the "Surround the French" and instantly thought of the Germans. I did not see the French word for 'word' which is, I believe, "world' or such.

As for the second sentence, I believe my translation is more true to the 'inner meaning' if you get my drift.

As for the third sentence: I speak only classical French, not the strange dialect spoken here.

The literal meaning of Entoure is to surround. Conversationally it means circle.

I used the interwebs for help since my French is worse than my Italian, and that isn't great.

The most accurate site for single word translation is here.

Now, if you need help with French geography or Tour de France history I'm you guy.

Remember to tell your son to shrug her shoulders in an exaggerated fashion while speaking French, like so: :confused3

LOL! Without offending any German DISers, that would be my first thought as well. (check your pm's ...)

As for the strange dialect, blame Google Translator.

I did interpret what Google "meant", but I didn't want to mess up the OP's DS12's homework if I was wrong.

Hello, We live in Paris and I have to deal with "French" homework on a daily basis. In fact, our new school year starts tomorrow.

1. Circle the French words. How many are there?
2. Do research and write six other words whose origins are French-- that
you frequently use in the English language.
3. Find the words on page four of the book and write them down.

Bon courage avec tes devoirs! Good luck working with the homework!

Emilie

Katy, I forgot to mention that I have a 12 year son and an 11 year old daughter who would be glad to help out with homework questions in the future. Just send us an email.

Thanks! My kids have always studied Spanish. I took Spanish in High School, so I could figure it out! Not French! I appreciate the offer for more help.

Well, I never took French either. I did take Spanish and Italian, which are both 'romantic' languages, much like Barry White songs. Anyway, since I am able to understand most of what Barry White sings, then I figure I can also understand French. I may have to rethink many of my interpretations of Mr. White's lyrics.
