My aunt is a brittle diabetic and would like a service dog to help her control her condition.
Is there a national organization or registry that could help me find someplace to get a dog? I've been trying to research service dogs for diabetics in her state (Nebraska) and not getting anywhere. I've contacted service dog organizations in my area, but it hasn't been helpful.
Can anyone help?

Anyone???

I'm trying to help out my aunt because she doesn't use a computer, and she is recovering from a hip replacement after being hit by a car. After she recovers and is done with rehab, she will be able to take care of a dog. She's had numerous EMT visits (they know her by name) due to the diabetes, and a dog would help her immensely!!

Try the National institute for diabetic alert dogs. www.nidad.com. They are a pretty large institute and even if they can't help, might be able to point you in the right direction. Good luck.

Thank you SOOO much. My dsis and I have both been researching this and have not come across any mention or reference to NIDAD.
That is exactly what I've been looking for.
Thanks again!!!

Inquire with the good people of the International Association of Assistance Dog Partners (IAADP). http://www.iaadp.org .

I know "Dogs for Diabetics" is a big one, but I'm not sure where they are located. If your aunt can travel to get her dog when the time comes, it won't matter (as long as the program gives nationally instead of just in one state or region).

Do realize that there are two different types of dogs for people with disabling diabetes: diabetic alert dogs and diabetic response dogs. Alert dogs can sense low/high blood sugars and alert the person so that the person can do something about it. They also usually are trained in response tasks, such as bringing the phone to the person if they collapse or dialing 9-1-1 on an adapted house phone. Response dogs don't alert, they just do the response tasks like the ones I mentioned.
