anyone have experience with Trojan.startPage.R ? This appeared yesterday. I now have a tool bar installed , and eprotectpage.com has overidden my homepage :( Any advice?

Do you have a good anti-virus software?? If so run it.

You can always go to ZDNET and download a copy of McAfee for a free 30 day trial and run the anti-virus software that way.

Try this first and foremost - worse case you will have to reformat your hard drive to get rid of it if it doesn't work with the virus removals.

I've already run adaware and norton antivirus. I keep getting new popups for different websites offering virus protection, and can't get to my homepage at all- the virus is blocking it. It has also installed a new tool bar. According to my norton list the virus appeared in the system yesterday afternoon, and it's showing it's risk factor as low- affecting home pages ( no kidding )

I know which virus you are talking about . . . I had something similar . . .

This is what I did, I went into my control panel and did an uninstall for the program (which of course put itself back on the system)

Then I downloaded software from ZDNET - I downloaded a Spyware removal program and also the McAfee. I had to run these programs about 3 times before I got rid of it.

You see, I normally reformat my hard drive about once every 4 months, so I just used this as my excuse to reformat. Once the Spyware stuff worked, I made copies of all my photos, downloads, then I reformatted.

Download and run spybot search and destroy - it's freeware.
Download and run lavasoft ad-aware - also freeware
Download and run avast! anti virus home edition - also free.

Go to hijack this! (google it) and look up your trojan. There's instructions on how to remove your little bugger. Good luck. If you have any further problems, PM me and I'll walk you through it step by step via PM, messenger or cel phone.

Run a Trendmicro antivirus right from their site. it may take a bit of time, but its worth it. It cleaned out some stuff that my free downloaded AVG Antivirus & Spybot didn't catch. :thumbsup2

make sure you also run the CWShredder at their site.

If that doesn't remove it, you might have to go to:
http://wiki.castlecops.com/MRP

You can also go to
All programs and highlight acessories then highlight system tools and then click on system restore. It will probably pick a time from yesterday hopefully before the virus infected your system.
If that fails,go with Trendmicro. If the virus won't let you open it,then close it and open outlook express and try opening trendmicro again-it should allow you to open.

Also do downloaded a trial version of Trogan Hunter that should up. I second www.castlecops.com to for help. Also once get the virsus off your system. Which broswers to Mozilla Firefox or Opera.

Do a google search on the virus name. There are several websites out there that give advice on how to manually remove a virus if your virus software is unable too. It can take some time, but its better than having to reformat.

Thanks for all the offers of help! I've run all my security systems, and it's still thee ( along with tons of pop ups :( ). My oldest son ( computer engineering major ) tried to talk me through a repair over the phone, but I think I may have to wait until he comes home next weekend. It looks like we'll need to delete everything and reinstall it. This is also a fairly old Dell - maybe 7 or 8 years- so it may be easier to just get a new computer!
