I have some questions on upgrading a multi-day park ticket to an AP, and I'm hoping someone can help. Here is my situation:

My DF and I are going to WDW in December for 5 day and we know we're going back within 12 months for at least five more days so it makes sense to get Annual Passes. I started doing some research and found that I can get 10 day no expiration tickets from Undercover Tourist for $501 including tax. This is $35.76 cheaper than the gate price ($536.76). So here are my questions-

1. Can i upgrade the 10 day no expiration from undercover tourist to an AP?

2. I know i need to use the ticket at least once, but after that when i go to upgrade will the full ticket value be $536.76 (the gate price)?

3. An AP is 520.79, so what happens to that $15.93 difference between the AP and 10 No Expiration when i upgrade?

Thanks in advance. If my idea is sound/correct, I think this is the best way to save on APs because between the 2 tickets I save $71.52 which will basically pay for the Tables in Wonderland card, but if anyone has any other suggestions, I'm open to them!

Check out the sticky at the top of the page regarding everything you always wanted to know about tickets...

You can upgrade the 10 day no expiration to an AP, however, as you discovered an AP is less than the gate price of that ticket, so it's not really worth it. Technically that would be considered a downgrade and while Disney does allow people to downgrade tickets like that their policy is that you can't get a refund for the difference in the price. So that would lower your savings by the $15.93 difference between the two tickets.

Your better bet is to go back to Undercover Tourist (make sure you're using the mousesavers discount) and find the ticket with the most savings that's has a gate price that is *less* than the cost of an AP. Then use the ticket at least once to enter a park and go to Guest Relations and tell them you want to upgrade to an Annual Pass. Note that free parking is one of the perks of an annual pass, so if you're not staying onsite and you had to pay to park on the day you do the upgrade you can save your parking receipt and give it to the Guest Relations CM after you do the upgrade and they will refund your parking cost.

Also note that you can get a ticket that includes the water parks option (if that has a better discount) and you can still use that ticket to upgrade to a regular annual pass (that doesn't include water parks) as long as you don't actually use the ticket to enter a water park before you do the upgrade. If you do use the ticket to enter a water park then your only option will be to upgrade to the premium annual pass that does include waterparks.

did you know if you sign up for the Mousesavers newsletter at http://www.mousesavers.com/ they send a link to Undercover Tourist to buy tickets at a bit more of a savings. (Maybe $4 off each ticket.) You might be too late for this month, but since you are not going until Dec. I thought you might not be buying tickets right now.

Thanks for the info! It looks like the best option below the cost of the AP is the Park Hopper + Water Park Fun & More (Fun Visits) (7 day) - No Expiration at $452 (without the Mousesavers deal, which i just signed up for, THANKS!), a savings of $31 a ticket.
