So I am flying tomorrow. I don't fly much. I know I can take a personal item along with one carryon bag. Does anyone know if the personal item can be a backpack? I want something I can put some books, my purse and a few other small items in.

Yes your personal item can be a backpack. I've seen people who look like they're ready to hike the Appalachian trail with their backpacks stuffed full. I think "technically" your personal item has to be able to fit under the seat in front of you though.

Yeah, I don't want to stuff it. I am just going to a college class orientation and I will need to lug my books and laptop. I thought I would just put my things in that so I don't have to pack it in my luggage. The Southwest website doesn't list backpacks as okay, and I was just wondering.

Have a great trip! There's lots of people that have normal sized backpacks and a carryon luggage piece and I've never seen anyone not be able to put both pieces overhead (unless it's a packed flight and I've only seen that happen once). It's just funny to see the people that look like they're trying to smuggle in a kid in a backpack :).
