I'm thinking of bringing my boys to DW just before they go back to school next September and I've heard that the crowds start to thin out the closer you get to the end of August. Here, the kids go back to school on the day after labour day. I know different schools go back at different times, but I just wanted to get a general idea of when it would be best to go. I will put up with the heat if it's exchanged for smaller crowds. Thanks for any input. :sunny:

Hi,

You will get a wide range of back to school dates, but I can tell you from first-hand experience that crowds get MUCH lighter after around August 15. You can also tell that is the case because park hours get shorter after around the 15th.

Thre will be a spike in crowds around Labor Day weekend, but crowd-wise, IMO the last two weeks of August are better to go than any other time of the summer.

Well, the State of Michigan just passed a LAW that our schools cannot go back until AFTER Labor Day. Something about wanting to promote tourism & earn more tourist $$ in the state.

Well...my tourist dollars will be heading south....LOL

:Pinkbounc That means I will be there at the end of August until Labor Day. :Pinkbounc

We visited WDW the end of July/beginning of August this past year and attendance was much lower than during our May or October visits this same year. Ironically, we experienced the absolute fewest guests the week before Christmas!! ::yes::

We went the weekend and week after Labor Day and it wasn't crowded at all. Of course, that was in 2003. The Fast Pass machines were shut down and there weren't any lines for the characters at all. It was very hot though! Spent a ton of money on drinks and ice cream. Our schools go back the second week of August. Mobile/AL

Our schools start in mid-Aug., which is a bummer because dh is a teacher and that prevents us from taking advantage of the lighter crowds later in the month. Anyway, I've read that the later in Aug. you go, the lighter the crowds are.

in central MA the kids go back Aug 31st, very end of Aug

DS & I spend two weeks at WDW last Aug 13-27
This year we're returning Aug 12-26

We also have a LAW that we can not start until after Labor Day. However, school districts can get WAIVERS to start earlier, if they prove that public opinion supports it, which they do by having voting/polling..............which of course can be slanted any way they want it (no one checking the ballots, only letting a select few vote, and so on), and of course, that makes the whole passing of the law ridiculous. Now, someone is calling that out, and they will be voting on it at some point, so we may or may not start after Labor Day.

My son's district and mine have developed two calendars........one for after Labor Day start and one for traditional start. If we use traditional start, he will begin school on August 21st, and my school district begins August 15th.

This August will be our 4th consecutive trip. We did the week of 4th of July in 2000-and it was a mad-house(but still awesome). My daughter was only 3 then so we didn't get caught up with the crowds-we had our own pace. We love the last few weeks of August-we will probably always go that time of year. It is hot but the crowds are nice and the afternoon rains in Florida thin out the crowds even more-we rode Buzz Lightyear 10 times non-stop in 2004.

See you there :flower:

We also go back after Labor Day.
Last year we went the very last week of August into Sept(came home Sunday of Labor Day) for the first time.
I was prepared for crowds..but it was so quiet(until Saturday/Sunday of Labor Day weekend).
Less crowded than May, October and early Dec.I would go back at that time again in a heartbeat, it was awesome!
