Ok, today my five year old DD asked me why Mickey doesn't talk. What do some of you say? I am not big on *lying* but I do not want to spoil the magic just yet! We do talk about stage magic and Disney magic and things like that. I've told her things like the Dinosaurs at the Dinosaur ride are not real)(no real dinosaurs left on earth....), but I've said it's the real Mickey in Disney World (it is, right?)...

Anyhow, any help about non-speaking characters would be appreciated.

Thanks!

I've said that he can't speak all languages and so not to offend any child, he doesn't speak to any children at all and also I've said that he can only talk in the movies.

It's tough when this happens!

Also wait till your child notices that not all Princesses or 'face' characters are the same. Snow White looks different at breakfast then she did in the parade!! What we do for that is say that there's only one Belle, Snow White, Mickey etc.. and the rest are their helpers. My DD believes all the 'real' ones are at MK.

Good luck!

My DD5 just asked if the characters are real people dress up or not?
Hellp!

Hellp!

Sometimes I just turn it around and ask my DD what she thinks and I let her answer the question. She doesn't want to believe they are people in costumes so she has always said I think it's really Mickey. Same with Santa and the Easter Bunny. So maybe deep down inside she knows the truth but she doesn't want to give it up.

Good luck!

I just had the same question asked by my DD 6. I in turn asked her a question. Her question was "Is Mickey Mouse Real?" I asked her "Do you think he is real?" She said "Yes." And I said I do to and that is all that matters.

She was happy with that.

Mickey is saving his voice for the shows, where he has to sing loud.

I tried asking her the question back. She answers that she thinks he is real but... "her friend said it was just people...why did she say that...... are they really just people... she shouldn't say that... why...why..." you get the idea. She is relentless my little one. I still have not given her a good enough reason. If I tell her itis the real mickey etc then it is why her friend said it wasn't. If I say he is as real as she believes then it is another why. Oh to be 5 again.:D

my dd is at the same stage - I have never answered directly but I ask her what she thinks and why. Initially it was 'Mickey is real' but now she says it#s not the real one because the chip & dale are tiny on the tv and huge in real life, and whoever saw a mouse that big etc etc, but she says 'it's ok, I'm still excited to meet them'

she does still maintain the princesses are real though - she can see they aer real people so no worries there. :)

Last year my friend's son told my dd the Easter Bunny wasn't real. I was sooo mad. OK, she was 6 at the time, but that time of believing in Santa and the Easter Bunny are so short. Sooo, guess who recently told dd the characters are just people wearing a big costume? Now, I don't mind that so much because the characters are big and don't talk. But it is going to be fun to see her reaction to the face characters!

My 4 year old hasn't asked about this yet...I hope he never does! lol:eek:

Barb is correct. Mickey has to do lots of shows and movies, so he has to conserve his voice.

Safari Steve, thanks for confirming that! :)

Just a note to anyone whose kids haven't met Mickey (or other characters) yet---be sure to mention to them ahead of time that the characters don't speak! Our DS 3 was SOOO excited about meeting Mickey for the first time last year, but after finally meeting him, DS was very sad and disappointed that Mickey hadn't talked to him! This year we are telling him and our younger son that Mickey talks a lot in the shows and on TV so is saving his voice. :)

My daughter (DD5) thought that the characters were real, until she was watching Disney 411 on the Disney Channel. The show told my daughter that Belle was not real, that it was someone dressed up as Belle. I was so upset! I really wanted to make it down to WDW before she decided that the characters were not real.

On the bright side, its only Belle who is not "real" All the others are the real deal. The mind of a 5 year old!!:D :D

Funny my kids 13 & 11 have never once asked me this. On the other hand my 11 yo has asked if the animals on the Jungle Cruise are real.

If Mickey had to talk to EVERY kid that visited him, he would lose his voice!

The problem I had with that excuse was my DD would then say "well then why do the Princesses talk?"

It's so tough!

I always refer back to Santa, "Honey if you believe he is real, then he is" Thats why some people (we have jehovah witness friends) don't have Santa come to their house, because they don't believe and thats OK too.!!

Probably confused the h*ll outta of my kids but it stopped the questions! ;)

My JUST turned 3 year old asked me this just last month! I couldn't believe it!!! I hadn't prepaired for that, since he's only 3! So I told him, because they are so busy with all the people who want to see them, that they can't really spend time talking. I was totally thrown off, but it seemed to answer his question.

Aryn, I don't know if this helps, but that Disney 411 was about the stage show on Broadway. That Belle wouldn't be the same Belle as at the parks--kind of like Madonna played Evita in the movie, you know what I'm trying to say?
