Hi Everyone!:wave2:

Well, the hammer has finally fallen. I have saturated my work laptop with pics, and need to clean out at least 40g! I will burn CDs, but I want to upload the files too - I am so afraid of losing the CDs (plus, what a pain to access and review!).

What do you think is the best free place to upload and store your pics, and why? I have accounts on photobucket and shutterfly.

Thanks - I look forward to your reviews/opinions!:thumbsup2

um...did I mention I was supposed to have that done before I go back to work tomorrow???:crazy2: :hourglass :scared:

Go buy a removable hard drive. That is going to be your best option and can probably be had for around $50-75. Circuit City is in liquidation as of yesterday.

I use Photobucket and upload to there. No problems with that site.

Is there any free site that allows uploading of full size files like smugmug will? Or do they compress them some when uploading.

Is compressing bad? I think I compressed the pics on my hard drive, thinking (mistakenly?) this would help free up space...:confused3

You are allowed an Image size of 1 MB and a image dimensions of 1024x768 for the free account.

Two different things. Compression on your drive is just a way to store more stuff in a certain amount of space. It does nto affect the quality of your shot. The compression that things like Photobucket do actually shrink the size of your shot to somewhere around 1MP. It is NOT a backup method. It is only a way to share your shots with others. I do not believe that there are any free services that are going to give you 40GB of space. Besides, online services should not be relied on as a backup method b/c the company could go out of business, burn down, etc. tomorrow and your shots could go bye bye with nothing you can do about it. Physical backups are the only methods that can be relied on. You should also use two different methods for redundancy, such as a removable drive and cd/dvd copies.

Jpegs dont compress when your hd does it anyways, they have a zero rate.

i second the external drive, they are pretty cheap and you don't have to worry about someone going out of business etc. it's nice to just have them there on your computer and not have to go anywhere to get them( virtually go somewhere i mean, not actually walk somewhere:) ,

btw nice to hear from you jen:wave2: i haven't seen you around for a while, which could just be me not reading the right threads, )

This is not a good alternative for a backup. Unless your using an older PnS digital camera. Though my 7 year old Canon Powershot S30 gives about a 2.5MB file size. My Nikon D50 dSLR gives me about a 4MB file size and my D300 gives me anywhere from 6-10MB JPEG file size.

1MB is maybe good enough to print a 3x5" print. Evan that is pushing it. The free photobucket account compresses the original file a lot!

Your better off paying the $40 a year for smugmug or zenfolio.

For at home storage, I'd go with an external hard drive. You can get 500GB external drives for around $100.

Thanks for the feedback everyone!

Any thoughts on an Iomega hard drive? http://www.amazon.com/Iomega-Prestige-Desktop-External-34270/dp/B001D7REIK/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1232759319&sr=8-1

Hiya Janet! Thanks for the welcome! I haven't been on the boards much at all in months! Kids keep me too busy, but i think too is my addiction to playing scrabble on pogo!:upsidedow I haven't been shooting at all almost. I like to shoot baseball, but my son was out almost whole fall season w/ injury (all mended now and ready for spring season!). Also, I still haven't fallen in love w/ my 40D; I actually think I might like my XT better.... :crazy2: How're you? :goodvibes
