I need some gauranteed remedies to either bites or to stop the blessed things invading our home - this morning I killed more than a dozen in my sons bedroom alone and he has upwards of 50 bites infact his teacher thought he had Chicken Pox at school today ! ( she has no children and doesnot know they are blisters you get and not spots). My youngest son and myself very rarely get bitten. I have tried lots of things lavender, spraying the bedrooms with fly killer, hanging insect killers, insect repellent and we still seem to be being bitten - anyone got any bright ideas.

Have you tried the plug-ins in the room? You can get them from Boots and other chemists - I've seen then successfully kill off mosquitos so they should work for gnats.. just follow the instructions. Before he goes to bed I think you need the room closed up and the plug on for about 30 mins but do check.
Another way to stop him being bitten is if you have a safe room fan and have it so that it is moving - the constant movement of air will deter them.
What is causing them to be in such large numbers? Are you next to a river?

Snookhams - SNAP!!

We live in Barking also !!!

We were being bitten alive by gnats or even mossy's as I've killed a few and founf a lot of blood in them - uuck I know.

I ended up buying a plug in liquid mossy thinggy from Boots (there own brand). I originally bought the travel tablet plug in but apparently you can't use that in the UK?

So we now have this liquid plug-in on every night and we haven't been bitten since and we keep the window open when we come to bed.

I think it's because we live a stones throw from the Thames.

Thanks for your help I will go to the larger branch of boots (near savacentre) tonight and see if I can get a plug in for the boys room. We are not right near a river although a couple of neighbours have PONDS!, trying to keep the bedroom windows shut but its so hot at the moment.

Hi Snookhams & Sam,

I too used to have the exact problems with myself and DS3 being bitten to pieces when we lived in sunny Rainham (not!). Apparently the marshes used to be sprayed every year but this was stopped when building work started on railway line/A13 etc. Anyhow, I found the plug-in tablet type worked a treat, also if you can't bear to have windows shut all night tape some spare net curtain across the window opening. Best spray I have found would be Jungle Formula (sounds scary!) which is in a bright green can or roll-on. Made by the Hospital for Tropical Diseases but available at most chemists now.

Hope this helps!

Youngest DD Laura gets bitten a lot too - they're attracted to her bedroom I'm sure!

However, for her birthday this year she asked for an insect net that she'd seen in IKEA, of all things! It's one that you hang from a bedroom ceiling and it's very long (it covers her bed totally and drags on the floor - and she's in a top bunk!)

Since it's been installed she's not had one bite! (That wasn't the idea when we bought it mind you, she just wanted the romantic look for her bedroom!)
