HELP! - We bought fanny packs!

Hey they still make Spam, but that does not mean you should eat it.

Why am I mean.? When you see a makeover show is that mean? When you see a spouse that is unhappy with the way the other dresses is that mean? Books, magazines and TV shows spotlight on what to wear and what not to wear....are those mean too? We vacation often, and believe me the only thing I am concerned with is a good time not what you folks wear. I am responding to a post that's all. My point is is that you don't have to look like a dork. I do have to admit though OMG I have seen some pretty horiffic outfits....I am not looking but some do stick out like a sore thumb. You have to admit it too as I have seen posts here regarding what other people wear in the parks including pictures of the fashion victim, so give me a break.

If you feel comfortable looking like that, that is your choice. All I am saying is that if you don't want to look like a dufus there are choices that will not cost you any more than what you spend now.

You don't have to be a fashionista to figure that out, you just need a mirror.

To each his or her own. Yes I have seen the makeover shows, usually they are hosted by professionals in their field not a member of a public WDW forum. I really am sad that you feel the need to put everyone down to what ... make yourself feel better? Do I have my personal opinions on what I consider to be a fashion don't? Sure I do. But I have enough tact to keep those thoughts to myself. I just don't like the idea of putting someone down or hurting their feelings. That pretty much sums it up for me.

One last thing about your Spam comment... funny you should mention that. It is VERY popular in Hawaii. Never failed every week in the grocery store ads it was on sale! In fact you can find it just about anywhere even at some of the nicer places to eat! Just because it may be an odd thing for you to eat doesn't mean it isn't "hip" in other parts of the US!

OMG...don't do it, don't give in. No it is not OK to become dorky or "be your parents" you don't have to be a dufus to be comfortable.

Coach makes a great bag. It is an across the body bag, it is stylish, holds more than a belly/fanny bag or whatever its called, and it's hands free and adjustable. It is not heavy and you don't have to take it off to go on a ride. Go to www.coach.com and under handbags go to types then look for "across body" it's called a Swingpack. I always get so many compliments on it, and it is such a great bag you can wear it everywhere...not just WDW. It's great when shopping.

If you start wearing those horrible fanny bags you know what's next?
matching lime green shirts, bright colored crocks, elastic waist bands, socks with sandals, mister fans and bottles hanging from your belt and flip up sunglasses.....Do you really want to go there? I mean really, life is too short to walk around like that, no matter where you are.

You don't have to spend any more money than you can afford to look good. Just because you are in WDW does not mean you have to walk around looking like "Walt Disney threw up". Comfort does not mean you have to dress like a "DON'T". What about self esteem and pride in yourself and caring about what you look like. It has nothing to do with how much money you have or if you are a size 6 or 60. Some people just don't care about themselves and it shows. My question is why look bad when you can look good???

Dress down IYO is one thing... Dress down in some others is different.
What you think of "Self Esteem" is one thing.... I however think clothing does not make or brake my self esteem. What you think looks good I may not... but all of this is what make so great.

I am so sad to see people arguing here about comfort v. fashion. You know, my husband thinks I have lost my mind for being a DISer and I think there are many in the larger world who share his view. So, maybe we can all just agree to respect each others' different views, and unite in our sameness, that is, our addiction to Disney.
Now, with regard to what to carry to Disney--I am going to WDW in 13 days and I am still in a quandry over what to carry. A fanny pack seemed too small and the idea of having water bottles hanging off my belt seems cumbersome. My DH will be staying home to work, so I didn't want to have to carry the weight of a back pack all day. I liked the idea of the Coach swing bag, because it was bigger than a fanny pack but smaller and lighter than a backpack, but, at $98 I couldn't justify it (though I do have a coach briefcase). So, I found a less expensive ($30) swing bag on gap.com--

I think comfort is key when at Disneyworld.

I do not think you are a "dufus" if you choose function over form.

When at Disney one should take in the wonderful sites, enjoy ones family, & treasure the time you have there..not worry about what other people are wearing or what they are carrying. Thats one of the great things about WDW..you can just hang & be a kid again & not worry about how you look.

Self esteem comes from your inner person..how you feel, how you treat other people, how you respect yourself & others, how proud you are of the choices you make in life...
Not whether or not you are wearing tye dyed crocs, matching tee shirts, or a fanny pack.

Please, if you ever see me at a park, look away! I'm there for family time, not to be on a fashion runway. With being on my feet all day, I dress for comfort, plain and simple. I too wear a fanny pack and our family wears matching shirts. I, for one, don't give a rip about what others think I look like and I do have self esteem and pride. Pride of being a family and enjoying each others company.

Just a thought, with kids so young, you will undoubtley need a stroller. Are you bringing your own or renting Disneys? If you are renting one from Disnet a really useful tip would be to get a bag that you can attach to the Stroller. What works best would be a type that you can clip on, the doubles are wide. This way your bag can hold diaper and other incidentals that aren't as valueable. I too would want the cameras safegaurded on me, but is foolish to hold EVERYTHING when you'll have wheels with you. Also another tip I wish I would have read. When I went last Feb., with my infant and 4 years old, I was convinced by my mom (who was going with us) that is would be much easier to take my own strollers--we took 2 singles thinking it would be easier than the double. The last full day of our trip I rented one from the park and couldn't believe how easy it was to push, what a great height it was and how safe it was. My biggest regret was not renting one sooner. Just a thought---Enjoy your trip!

I guess I never saw it on the news when fanny packs became "uncool"

I am 17 and the only way I will travel in WDW is with one of these "uncool" things hanging from my waist! lol. It holds everything for me so that my hands are free to pick up one those tasty Mickey Bars or open a bottle of water (which is much needed in the summers days! )

It protects my resort key, my camera, my $$ (which sooner than later lessens in weight as the days move forward! haha), my souvenirs, and anything else that may add to the magical memories. I holds everything a young girl needs!

My fanny pack is black with a Mickey on the front. Not all fancy shmancy, just plain and simple. (I also bought another *smaller* pack that has Tigger attached to the "body-side" so it appears as if he is hugging you! Very cute )

The fanny pack was not expensive, is not some "big-shot" name and gives me exactly everything I need when I visit the most magical place on Earth! It doesn't make my outfit look horrible and quite frankly, I could care less what others think of me when I am down there! Heck, it's Disney! I am there to have fun, not strut down a catwalk! lol.

This single fanny pack has lasted me years upon years of visiting WDW and still looks brand new! Honest! I was able to stuff my poncho in the thing numerous times and still, despite the damp plastic, it hasn't warped slightly.

I would not survive Disney without this thing, and you all can say what you'd like about them. For me, I need a purse to hold things like this and I don't want to be bothered about forgetting my purse somewhere, having to hold onto it during a ride, or have to carry it around. I love being hands-free; worry-free!

Well, I am a fanny packer too & another Diser who doesn't give a care what anyone else thinks because I am too busy having fun. I wear my Disney fanny pack because it holds what I need & it makes life easier.

I have not used the bag in the parks yet--I just bought it today. In my local Gap store they had the bag in brown, beige, brown and beige stripe and LIME GREEN AND BEIGE STRIPE (but I bought brown). The strap is not as thin as it looks in the online picture--but honestly, I never thought about it before you mentioned it!!! I am going to WDW sporting my new bag June 21-23--if you are going later than that and want to know how it worked--try to remember to PM me after 6/23 and I will fill you in.

A lot of my friends have posted on this thread - and I know that it is hurtful to them to hear that wearing a fanny pack and all the other fashion mistakes we make at WDW or really anywhere else for that matter show a lack of self esteem - I am here to say that I have a lot of self confidence - I am active in my community, have wonderful children, an amazing husband, great family and friends & I wouldn't change my lot in life for the world!!!!! and I have committed EVERY single one of your fashion mistakes - on numerous occasions!!

As a matter of fact - you can see in my picture that I was even so ridiculous as to wear knee brace during my most recent WDW trip in order to be able to walk all weekend!!!

so this is what I have to say:

you really are all amazing women who handle life's struggles with grace, support friends in their times of need, show compassion, warmth and generosity - and I say if wearing fanny packs make us a DUFUS

i have to laugh that we are on page 5 of this thread, i saw it when it was first started and replied immediately, i took it as tongue in cheek and got a big laugh from the original poster, i really did not order the coach bag, come on, how in the world could i fit everything in it and i would not risk ruining a nice bag like that on rides, etc...i use a kipling sling type bag with lots of compartments, really the only fashion faux paus i can think of is when i see women in high heels in the parks? that is just so wrong

Awesome! I will try to remember. Or you can mention it in a trip report! (love those) Have a fantastic time. I still have 3 months to go! I have purchased bags from the Gap before and always loved them. Anyway, again have a great time and enjoy the magic!!!

I have been trying to keep up with this thread, do you know how many times I have packed and unpacked my white reeboks and black socks, in exchange for my brown sandals and white socks. I can't even count how many times my plaid polyester pants have been carried from and to the closet.

Should a guy in his forties bring a speedo for the waterparks or not??

Thanks to the OP, we went to Old Navy yesterday and I asked about the waist pack, they were sold out. Went to another one today and she said they had 2 in the back. She brought it up and said she could only find one, it was on clearance for $2.97!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The original tag was $14.50!!! I have never used one, I don't need to draw any other attention to my middle so I think my DH will wear it. It is really big and I know it will work great for our small DVD camera and our digital camera, plus a couple of other little things. I was thrilled to find one, and at that price!!!

YEAH! I'm so glad that someone has benefited from this horrible thread I started! I love the packs we bought. I don't normally wear anything around my waist, but I'm tired of getting hit in the head with a bag on my back when I bend over. We take umbrella strollers and when the kids get out, if a bag is on the back of it, it goes over backward! lol. I'm PROUD to be joining the pack bregade. lol.
The title was meant to be tongue in cheek. We have always teased our parents about them and have finally matured enough to realize that many times, practicality wins out over "fashion." I actually think the ones that we bought look nice. Kind of like hiking gear. I'm glad you found it on clearance! WOW! What a deal! Maybe I should go ask if they have any in the back here! We got ours on sale for I think $10. But $2.97 is much better!
