With almost perfect timing our washer dryer is acting very strangely - here's hoping one of you can give me some advice (at the moment in a dilemma whether to call out a repair man or put the 'call out fee' towards a new machine!)

:confused3 Basically when its washing it just keeps washing - emptying and filling constantly.

:confused3 When its 'drying' um see above!

Any help appreciated

Thanks

Sorry cant offer much in the way of advice but I know that when washer/dryers go haywire it can get quite expensive to repair if they are repairable and with a newbie coming along you want something reliable! I would try kicking it and if that failed consider a newer model! Good luck next month by the way! :flower:

Crikey Jo! That is not what you need at the moment is it?

If it's an expensive model I would think about a repairman, if not I would replace - as soon as possiblke in view of your imminent arrival :goodvibes

Good Luck to you!

How old is it? If it is relatively new and relatively expensive it may be worth calling out the repairman, otherwise......

...how good are your DIY skills?

Before I call out the repairman I tend to have a look first. We have an "upper mid priced" (if that makes sense) Zanussi. Something similar to that happened to ours recently. So this is what I did.

I checked the dust filter - mostly clean, but cleaned it anyway.
I checked the main water pipes - one had gunge in its filter so I cleaned it.

Washing machine works perfectly well now...may have been coincidence but...

...happy DW and happy me (no expensive call out). :teeth:

That happened to one of my washing machines - about 2 machines ago. I think it was either the programmer or the timer - had both done at some point! Either way it was costly.

I have been through 5 washing machines in 28 years - on my 6th - BUT the one I have now has been fantastic - it's a Miele - has lasted ages and is SOOO quiet too.

You could get it repaired but if it's more than 6-7 years old, I wouldn't bother.

I dont know anything about washing machines but just wanted to say hope you get it all sorted. This must be the last thing you need what with the baby coming soon so sending you pixie dust! :wizard:

Hiya

Sorry 2 hear about ur poorly machine, thats the last thing u need when a new baby is due. After my first DS was born my machine packed up and we didnt really want 2 go and buy one so i rented one and have been doing since really. I've had a few upgrades since then cause its nearly 9yrs but its great no worries about it breaking done or anything. And i know some ppl might think its wasted money but when u buy a new machine once that guarantee has run out most ppl take out insurance.

Its just an idea 4 u, hope u get it sorted :flower:

Thanks Everyone for your help and good wishes!

Richard - you'd have been proud of me. I was going to wait for DH to come home but then remembered I didn't marry him for his DIY skills (just as well!) so I checked the filters as suggested (and even looked at the troubleshooting bit in the manual and tried that) but no joy!

As the machine isn't actually that old we've decided to call a repair man out and depending on the likely cost of a repair we'll fix or dump!

Will let you know what happens (as I always like to know the outcome of these threads myself!) but just hoping DD doesn't get our tummy bug in the mean time! :scared:

Cheers

What a nice repairman (we have used him in the past and I thought I must have kept his card for a reason!)

When I described the problem on the phone he said that it would cost a lot to fix and I was better just getting a new machine. He said that all brands were much of a muchness (got the impresssion Ariston wasn't great - we'd no idea what was what when we bought it!) but that Miele were good. (Gill - you obviously did your homework! I get the impression that brand might be out of our price range this time ;) )

mrs-mac - I might look into how much they are to hire (thanks for the idea) You'd love/hate to be near us in an electrical shop when a salesman is pushy in trying to sell us insurance as DH works in reliability statistics and I used to market insurance. If s/he is really pushy we even draw graphs :teeth:

So I guess off we go tonight washing machine hunting - I suppose the timing could be slightly worse (say about 16 days worse!)

Had to laugh though, feeling rough yesterday and finally persuaded DD to curl up in bed with me and watch a video only to find...you've guessed it...player doesn't work. It never just rains does it :umbrella:

Thanks once again guys :grouphug:

The prices are MUCH cheaper now but if you think Miele are out of your range give AEG a go - they're good too.

Good Luck getting a new machine!
