Our washing machine and drier are 18 years old and Sunday our washing machine was making some horrible noise. open lid and inside tank had stop spinning but outer tank that you cant really see is still spinning. Thats my guess any way.

So if it is dead what kind of washer would you all get we may even get a new drier to match?

If it was me I'd invest in a new set. At some point the other will go out, and it would probably be more economical to have a new energy efficient machine rather than pay for any upcoming repairs.

As for my recommendation, we have a Kenmore set. It's nothing fancy, and is one of their cheaper models available, with high capacity. We've had the set for a few years and have been pleased. Growing up we always had Kenmore units and found that they were meant to last.

I had kenmore but this last time went with GE. Also bought new set when the washer died as knew the dryer was not to far behind.

I have a maytag bravos set. Top load that is HE. There is no agitator, and I can fit a ton of stuff in that thing! King size comforters even! Dries quickly. Probalby my favorite appliance purchase. Good luck!

My washer and dryer are in the basement. When one dies, I only replace the 'dead' one. I don't necessarily get an older model repaired, but I do use the things until they stop working. My washer/dryer don't need to visibly match as I am the only one to see them. THe only time I had a 'set' was when I bought my first ones back in 1981.

I would also suggest investing in a new one. However, if you don't have the money to buy something new right now, consider looking online (kijiji, craigslist). My sister ended up getting a 10 year old washer for $50 that just needed a $5 part to work. And now it works great! Just a thought....

If you or anyone in your house is handy you could google the problem with your washer. You might be surprised at how often you can fix something for very little money and DYI. Some web sites are very good at walking you through how to repair things.
