Hey, I'm not sure if anyone here as any knowledge of this subject, but I figured I'd ask. I'm going to begin taking a weight gainer supplement & I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations or anything like that. Basically the reason I'm going to take weight gainer is b/c my metabolism is so crazy that it is literaly almost impossible for me to make any real progress by just "eating more". I eat a lot as is & it seems to get me nowhere. I'm not looking to be huge, but as of now I am 20 yrs old, 6 ft tall & only weigh 150-155lbs so I wanna gain some. Any help is greatly appreciated! Thanks a ton!

Just wanted to wish you luck. In HS I took something called "Weight Gain"...not sure if it's out anymore, but didn't do much for me anyway. What about Ensure?

Yea I mean this isn't like something that is 100% necesarry for me to do ya know? I mean it's not like I look like I'm anorexic or anything like that, but the extra weight & strength would be nice. I don't wanna gain to the point where I'm fat, but adding a little size would be nice.

Contact a nutritionist or a dietician and spend the $ to get the right information.

i was told to put some weight on in my early 20's (jaw surgery with jaws wired shut for 6 weeks caused my 5'6'' frame to go into the 90 pound range). i tried the powders but i found them nasty and chalky. ended up drinking 3 cans a day (in addition to eating regular meals) of slim-fast. since they are developed as an entire meal replacement adding them to your regular diet can cause you to gain weight, plus the added benefit is you get plenty of the vitamins you need anyway.

When I started high school, I weighed in at 72 pounds. When I graduated, I was around 85 pounds. It didn't matter what I ate, I just never gained weight. I hit 30 years old, and those days are long gone! Now I just look at a big mac and it puts 10 pounds on me.

Ensure supplement mixed with icecream is a great tasting, nutritional, high calorie shake. It's always best to discuss this with your doctor to make sure that it's ok for you to do it. The protein and electrolytes in the nutritional supplements can aggravate some conditions.

Come over to my house and I will smack you around a little. That will surly swell you up. LOL just joking.... I am so jealous.
When I was younger I couldn't gain a lb. My mother was asked constantly if I had an eating disorder because I was so thin. I was just very active and always going.
Since I had my children I have gained quite a bit. I am slightly overweight, not obese but not happy with what I have. I try so hard to lose but nothing seems to work for me so I guess I have to just take what I have and be happy.
I did lose about 15 lbs during chemo, but it found me when I finished. I just can't hide good enough. Peggie

Move in with my mother. That always works for me. :rolleyes2

I agree with visiting a dietician and/or nutritionist. You want to gain healthy weight and they'll be able to help you.

They never worked for me. :confused3 Although, they did work for my sister. She always said that the weight she gained was from watching me eat bags of doritoes.

I agree with this advice. Plus, weight gain powder is not healthy and natural or may even cause intestinal problems. Perhaps it is better that a nutritionist or dietician come up with more healthy alternatives and help you add extra calories according to your needs and tastes, such as peanut butter snacks.

What?? Completely Untrue. I would love to know where you heard that.

To DVCR, I hate to tell you this, but you need to eat more. You may not be eating as much as you think you are. Are you counting calories?

A good weight gainer that I've used and recommend is NLarge2 from Prolab. Its relatively inexpensive and packed with calories.

While the Whey Protein is good, the fructose is not. Refined fructose causes it to enter the bloodstream quickly leading to fat gains.

I don't think these supplements are a good substitution for whole foods.

It is a weight GAINER. And if taken before and after a workout, fat gain will be minimized. And at his height and weight, I really wouldn't be concerned with a small amount of fat gain.

Never said to substitute anything for food. If your diet is in order, the supplements can help provide additional calories. But nothing can replace eating whole foods.

Which is why the OP needs to see a nutritionist or dietician to make sure his diet is in order. ;) :)

The OP didn't mention anything about working out, either.

Fair enough. It was probably a poor assumption on my part to assume that he already had a good diet, and was working out consistently.

Here's something to think about. The FDA does not regulate weight gainers, vitamins, or any type of nutritional supplement as much as they do medication. For the nutritional supplements, all they have to prove to FDA is that they are safe, where as if it's classified as a drug to the FDA is had to prove safety and effectiveness. So basicially a nutritional supplement can claim it does anything. Often what it claims is in the can, is not really there. It's very important that if you buy a nutritional supplement you get one from a reputable company.

As I mentioned before, it's best to consult with your physician first. The electrolytes and the protein in these can aggravate certain conditions.

I work our 3-4 times a week & eat 3 fairly healthy meals per day along w/ several snacks in between.
