Youngest DD got DS Lite w/ Nintendogs Dalmation. She wanted to name the dog, but it is not responding to the vocals. All she can do is pet it. The other two kids can't get it to respond either. What can we do? She was very excited about this gift and now doesn't want to play it because it is too frustrating.

Also, the Little Mermaid is in Spanish. Is there a language selection for that?

TIA,

lori

DS says to say the name (into the speaker of the game console) several times in a loud voice (not shouting). Make sure you are pronouncing it the same way each time. Hope it works!

I heard my DD and my MiL saying "Sit" very loud in the NintendoDS. Makes me wish I had my video camera there.

I just checked with DD10 to find out how to solve your problem. She recommends going to one of the selection menus and turning the microphone to "low". Sometimes the higher mic settings create static, and the DS can't understand what you're saying. She also said you have to speak the name you want more than once, and you have to say it the same way each time, so that when the DS repeats it back to you it sounds correct. She's had Nintendogs on her regular DS system for over a year and currently has about 7 dogs in her game.

Hmm not sure on the Ariel game but on dogs- You need to say it over and over the SAME way to get the dog to recognize it- and simple is better. My dd named her first dog Lucky- say it clear and not right on top of your mouth- about 1 foot away say it clearly and in normal tone- not too loud not too soft. It takes about 2 minutes of saying it before the dog finally gets it. But once the dog barks and gets a heart(she thinks) over it's head. It can bark before it "knows" it's name but once you see the icon(could be a bone too) you know the dog has it. Good luck.

My DD got this last year for Christmas. She was very frustrated with it also, and didn't play with it much for a few months. Then her cousin showed her how to do some things, and it just took off from there! She now has 5 dogs and has earned enough points to purchase 2 more rooms for the dogs.

I wanted to mention that my DS got the game over a year ago, but he was trying to speak to his puppy while riding in our car.
Our car is quiet. Inside the car is quiet when we drive, but for some reason the puppy wouldn't respond to his voice while in the car.
Once we got home it was fine.

I thought I'd mention that because there may be some background noise that confuses the DS system.

tell her to speak in a slow, clear voice - but don't shout. Shouting actually tends to distort what you are saying somewhat and the game won't pick it up. I discovered that with my Nintendo Brain Age game -- it is much better to speak slowly and in a normal voice than to shout over and over. Also, emphasize the vowels.

We had this same problem with nintendogs last Christmas. My oldest dd was almost in tears after trying to train her new dog. We told her it was like training a "real" dog and she would have to keep trying. After a couple of hours she finally got the dog to listen to her and ended up loving it and played with it religiously for months.

My DD6 just got the Dalmation Nintendogs for X-mas also and we were both trying to teach the dog it's name...got it to recognize the name and typed it into the DS, then petted the dog for a few minutes, then it wanted us to teach the dog it's name again (almost starting over). Is this normal or once you are allowed to name it by typing it in do you move forward with the game? Any help would be appreciated as DD is also very frustrated...mom is also! :confused3 .

Also - try a 2 syllable name that ends with "ee" or "o"

Dandy
kristy
steevo

etc.

Those types of names are more easily recognizable.

The Ariel game does have a language choice. Just choose English. My daughter was playing it in French for about 1 hour before I realized it wasn't automatically set to English.

My DD7 got this game for her DS aswell...here are my suggestions...

1. pick a short name. DD wanted to name her Golden Retriever Rosebud (from the Air Buddies movie) and it would not recognize it. I suggested just "Rosie" and it worked!

2. Don't get too close to the microphone.

3. Always speak in the same tone of voice...don't change the pronounciation of the dogs name

4. You do have to repeat the dogs name several times...it's the whole learning process...to get the pup used to the name!

We are having problems with our Dalmatian game as well. We cannot go out and buy food. We have another Nintendogs game so it isn't like we are new at this. I imagine I'll have to take this one back.

DS says your dog can't be too tired, then hit walk and then shopping, and if you have money, you should be able to go into a store and buy some food. Good luck!

All good suggestions about mic level and what not...May I ALSO suggest That you kids do the name set up by them selves in their rooms with NO BACKGROUND noise....for the initial name set up any little background noise will screw it up.
Hope you get it to work.

Yes, yes, exactly what happened to us! I am going to try and use some of the suggestions here, (thanks everyone), and try it again.

Once she gets the dog to recognize it, will it then only respond to her? As in, no one else can play w/ it but her?

YES! and no.... The Dog will only respond to her voice (name, tricks, ect.) others players however can take it for a walk or play fetch with it...but not really anythign with the voice.
