My family of 6 plans to stay for 2 nights in June at the HRH. My 18 yo Florida-resident nephew will be joining us. It seems like it would make sense to buy him a Florida resident AP (as opposed to just a 3 day pass) so he could get us room and park ticket discounts. I have seen in previous posts that there is a question whether we can book 1 or 2 rooms per AP, but even so, it seems like the discounts would be worth it. Am I missing something? Does the fact that he is only 18 yo make a difference?

You can get 2 rooms with a aph discount, but I belive you have to be 21
to check in/ reserve.

Remember that you don't get discounts with the Power Pass, which is the cheapest AP for Florida residents.

tricky1 is correct.

you have to be 21 to book a room at universal.

Yes, but only one person in the room has to have the AP. It doesn't have to be the person who reserves.

Yes that seems to be what they said when I called reservations. Book the 2 rooms using the APH code, check in with the 18 yo APH, and show that there is at least 1 person aged >21 in each room.

Do you have to be a Florida resident to buy an AP??

The power pass is only for FL residents (use to be available to non-Fl residents in the pass--we use to have that the first year, but upgraded to the preferred). There are APs for regular guest too. For non-FL residents you can purchase the preferred or premium. We have had the preferred pass for 4 years now. Both of these passes have perks and resort discounts. Free parking is one of my favorite perks. We went twice during our trip last week and at $15 a day to park, we saved $30!! by being AP holders.

This is correct only I wanted to make sure it was understood that having an AP does not give you free parking at the hotels...only the parking garage.

The Preferred AP for non-residents is $229.99 plus tax.

Yes, that is correct. Thanks for mentioning that to the non-AP holders out there reading this. I was surprised to see US/IOA parking higher than WDW, generally they stay about the same.
