I'm trying to figure out where to eat while at MGM, I was going to do Hollywood and Vine lunch (ds loves the Einstiens), but have read several poor reviews about this restaurant. I have read several good things about Brown Derby, is it kid friendly (ds will be almost 5)? What are some other choices at MGM??
So far I am also planning breakfast at Chef Mickeys and maybe Crystal Palace on MK days, dinner at Garden Grill on Epcot day, not sure what to do for AK day.
Also how is Hoop Dee Doo Revue? Is this worth it for a dinner?
TIA, Patty

I used to work at the Brown Derby and it is kid friendly. The menu is pretty much your typical kids menu. Mac and cheese, fish and chips, grilled chicken, ect. Also when I worked there kids were given crayons and they could color and do activities on their menu.

As for your other choices I think they are all good choices especially with a young child since they all have the character interaction. Plus the food at the Garden Grill is very good.

I have heard the Hoop Dee Doo Revue is alot of fun. I can't say from personal experience really, the last time I went to one I was 5 and don't remember that part of the trip.

We just ate at SCi-Fi drive in. DD loved it! It was fun to watch the movies, she laughed at them all. The food isnt high class but was good for us.

Dh had the butcher steak and the spinach dip (we had him sit behind us, girls got to "drive" the car) DD ate her macaroni but I should have said no to the chocolate shake so she would eat more. So it was 6 bites of macaroni and a huge chocolate shake for her. I had the onion rings and the tofu, both were very good. And I loved the cheesecake for dessert, I am going to put caramel sauce, carmel corn and m&ms on some at home for dessert one night.

We plan to go back again. It isnt Jiko but it worked great for us for the night.

We always eat at the Sci-Fi when visiting MGM Studios. The atmosphere is great and we've never gotten bad food. We've eaten just about everything on the menu and have never been disappointed. The entire restaurant looks like you are at a drive in theater complete with little cars, speakers and large movie screen. The Sci-Fi is very kid friendly. A meal at the Sci-Fi usually takes about an hour.

I also recommend Crystal Palace although we have never eaten breakfast there, only dinner. Dinner is great with a large buffet with an assortment of both adult and kid friendly foods. The restaurant is large and, if you are lucky, you can get a table near one of the windows with a view of Cinderella's Castle. At dinner, the characters (Pooh, Piglet, Eeyore and Tigger) come around to the tables and sometimes lead an impromptu parade around the restaurant. The kids are invited to join in but don't worry because the castmembers make sure the kids end back up near where they started from. A meal at the Crystal Palace takes between an hour and an hour and fifteen minutes.

If you want another choice for the Magic Kingdom, I would suggest Liberty Tree Tavern. The characters (Minnie, Goofy, Chip and Dale) are all dressed in Revolutionary style clothes. The food is pretty good. Not fabulous but good. Ham, turkey, mashed potatoes, macaroni and cheese, green beans, salad and rolls. For dessert they had ice cream and cobbler. It is served family style meaning they will bring large platters and bowls to your table and replinish them as needed. A meal at the Libert Tree Tavern takes about an hour to an hour and fifteen minutes.

I think you guys would enjoy a meal at the Garden Grill. The restaurant slowly revolves and you can look down at a couple of scenes from The Land ride. The characters (Mickey, Pluto, Chip and Dale) will all be dressed in their farming clothes. The meal of marinated steak, catfish, vegetables, turkey, stuffing, rolls and a berry pastry is served family style. A meal at the Garden Grill usually takes about an hour to an hour and fifteen minutes.

On our Animal Kingdom days, we usually stick to counter service and use our table service credit towards the Hoop Dee Doo since it takes two table service credits.

Speaking of the Hoop Dee Doo Review, we've been two times and really enjoyed ourselves. The show is chock full of corny jokes, lots of singing, dancing and music. The food is very good and is served family style. The menu changes periodically but is usually fried chicken, bbq ribs, corn on the cob, cornbread or rolls, salad, baked beans and strawberry shortcake.

Hope this helps you out! Lisa

My kids loved Hollywood and Vine with the Playhouse Disney characters. The food is ok, typical buffet food. The atmosphere was great. They had all of the kids up singing and dancing. It is great for young children.

If your son isn't shy I'd say 50's Prime Time would be great. The food is really good and the service is always entertaining. Kids love it especially when their parents get in trouble with the servers for having bad manners. :thumbsup2
That being said, Brown Derby is very relaxing and nice. It depends on the kind of atmostphere you're looking for.

If you're not on the dining plan and you want to see a really fantastic dinner show go to Dixie Stampede! It's just off property about 5 or so min. from Downtown Disney and it's a super good time. Unlike Hoop Dee Doo there aren't any obstructed views and the partcipation is collective and not individual (nobody gets singled out is what I mean). Have a look at the website for more info: http://www.dixiestampede.com

For MGM, what about fantasmic dinner package at mama melrose. I think their italian food is awesome. If you do not care about Fantasmic, I would try 50's.

My kids, 7 and almost 5, had a blast at Hollywood and Vine. The food wasn't bad, dh and I actually enjoyed it.
