We just found out that somehow our dogs got a hold of a bag of Hershey's Peanutbutter Kisses. It looks like about 2/3rds of the bag is gone. I don't know for sure who ate how much but I'm sure that Reilly (found asleep next to the bag) Tinker and Hailey ate some. Suzy has been on the bed with us so I doubt she was involved. That means a 10 lb, a 12 lb and a 17 pound dog shared the candy.

We are waiting to hear from the vet and in the meantime Matt is running to the store to get some hydrogen peroxide to make them vomit. Tinker already had a bit of diahrea...

Have you ever had this happen? What did you vet instruct you to do? HELP!

yikes! Im sorry that happened-the vet will tell you the best plan of action. I was replying to tell you that you can use salt on the back of the dogs tongue and that will make them vomit.

Those are milk chocolate, right? Milk chocolate is toxic at roughly one ounce per pound, so even the small dog would have to eat 10 oz. of solid milk chocolate to be in danger. Dark/baker's chocolate, on the other hand, is toxic at 0.1 oz. per 10 pounds.
I would be more concerned about the chance of gastritis/pancreatitis which is pretty common in small dogs. If you've already started making them vomit, I would continue. Most dogs pass the foil wrapping without any problems.

My mom's poodle got into a bag of chocolates and ate about half the bag. She threw up a ton and had diahrea for a day, but was alright in the end. Chocolate is very poisonous so she was lucky. Do you have an emergency vet?

They might have some digestive problems, but they'll be fine.

The danger level for MILK CHOCOLATE (and the peanut butter kisses should be lower in the dangerous theobromine than pure milk chocolate) is around 1 oz of chocolate per kilogram of dog weight.

So the 18 pound pooch could eat 18 oz of milk chocolate before hitting the danger level. Unless that was a HUGE bag of kisses, you should be cool.

The other part of the story?
Milk chocolate will often cause diarrhea 12-24 hours after ingestion. This should be treated symptomatically (fluids, etc..) to prevent dehydration.

Let us know how it turns out! Poor pooches...

Kathy, are you sure they will be okay? I'm so freakin scared. Matt's having a hard time finding somewhere in this town open at this time on a Sunday to get the Hydrogen Peroxide. I could kill him. These damn Hershey's Kisses were his and why he had them where the dogs could get a hold of them I don't know.

Should we just pack up the 3 and head to the emergency vet on the other side of town? If you guys think it's dangerous enough we will do it. Just worried about the cost because it will cost $75.00 just to walk in the building times 3 dogs before they even do anything. Not that I wouldn't sell my car to save these guys but if I'm overreacting...

My sister's Labrador Retriever ate a pound of Godiva chocolate while entrusted to me :confused3 including all of the dark chocolate pieces. She had vomitting an copious amounts of diarhhea for about 18 hours but she was okay. Poor thing :sad2: !! We'll be thinking about you! :grouphug:

My greyhound ate a whole bag of the regular kisses with the wrappers and she was okay. :grouphug:

Hopefully your dogs are able to handle the chocolate---our dear old basset hound lived for chocolate---we never fed him any but he always found it, it never made him sick and he lived to be 15--he loved to try and get to the easter eggs before the kids!
I hope your dogs are alright...it can be scary when you hear all of the stories about dogs and the hazards of chocolate so I thought I would slip this one in so you know that sometimes it isn't as bad as it could be

My poodle Minky ate my husband's entire box of Valentine candy, including the cellphane wrapping. I immediately call Poison Control and they reassured me that he would be okay. He did have some diarrhea and he didn't feel too good, but he made out okay.

Poison Control is very knowlegable not only of people poisoning but pet problems, too. I suggest you call them. You may not have to induce vomiting after all. Hope your babies are all right.

My 25 pound cocker spaniel at a 2 lb bag of M&Ms (Costco size). I didn't even know it until I found shreds of the bag a couple of weeks later. He was never even sick.

Thank you thank you thank you all. :grouphug:

(BTW, this is Lauri (MeanLaureen)

You don't know how scared I was - you hear all of the horror stories about dogs and chocolate and I got hysterical but Kathy has calmed me down by PMing me some stats on milk chocolate and peanutbutter filled chocolates so I'm much calmer now.

We just gave the Hydrogen Peroxide to 3 of them. Out of the three, Hailey threw up within 5 minutes - all bile. So I guess she got left out of the chocolate fest.

Still no movement from the 2 iron stomachs known as Reilly and Tinker. They are looking a little green though. :)

I almost died when I got out of bed to get something and saw Reilly laying there sound asleep with a half eaten bag of peanutbutter kisses securly tucked by his side. :scared1: How he got it out of Matt's Easter candy, I have no idea.

And just when we wondered out loud about if any of the other dogs got any, cue Tinker - phew!

Thank goodness Suzy is too old for that nonsense. She just came on in the bedroom, climbed into bed and slept like a good old girl. So we are 99.9% sure she didn't get into the chocolate fest.

*Whew* I'm not going to sleep now!

Thanks again for reassuring me. I know I sound crazy - but with me unable to have children, these guys are my kids. Plus Reilly is my therapy dog. I don't know what I would do without him. :sad1:

I'm glad you feel better. I've been where you are with our lab Jake (who by the way is like one of the kids - I love him like you wouldn't believe). You wouldn't believe all of the calls to the vet or the emergency clinic about things he's eaten. Most recently he ate a 12" chocolate chip cookie cake and two packages of hot dog buns! All in one day! But the biggest scares we've had have been corn cobs which can kill them and chicken bones which are also very dangerous.

I hope all continues to go well. Keep us posted and I hope the sweeties don't get too sick!

The milk chocolate really isn't bad - esp when there is peanut butter in there, too. THe amount of milk chocolate they got was probably not that much and most def not enough to be fatal.

We have told people how fatal chocolate is to dogs but never really told them what chocolate is fatal so people really panic. I went through the same thing when my Shih Tzu ate a bag of M&Ms. I freaked out but once I got online and really researched it before rushing to the doggie ER I realized he was going to be okay.

I will warn you that he was BONKERS for 2 hours afterwards; I guess the caffeine? Little bugger never had the big D or anything, though.

I hope the pups don't get too sick tonight and that you all get some sleep =)

Crazy dogs!

Well, it's almost one o'clock and the two cast iron stomachs still have not vomited after their peroxide chaser. :rolleyes2

Tinker the Tibetan Spaniel doesn't seem to be any worse for the wear but Reilly, the Poodle is starting to moan and roll over to expose his belly a bit so I'm thinking he has a bit of a stomach ache.

We are going to give him another half dose of the peroxide and see if we can get him to vomit to hopefully relieve his stomach a bit.

Hopefully this will work.

Well, it's almost 7 am. Lauri has headed to work. I'm taking at least the morning off to stay with them in case they start to - umm.. have explosive movements in the rear quarters.

So far Hailey and Suzy are completely fine so I'm not sure they got into the chocolate fest.

Tinker never did throw up from the peroxide but hasn't had anymore diarhea since the first episode. She did moan a bit last night so I think she had a killer stomach ache

Mr. Iron stomach - Reilly. 2 doses of peroxide and nothing. He didn't get diahrea but he moaned and groaned anytime you picked him up to move him and he's pretty "blah" this morning. He's mostly ticked because we blocked off his "Bachelor pad" under the bed. This is the second time in a year he scored something and stashed it under there for future partying (and there were stashes of little piles of Kisses under there last night - I swear the dog was rationing them. Last time he ate an entire package of Dentastiks in one sitting and it cost us $250 at the vet trying to find out why for 2 days he had insatiable thirst - only after we got back from all the tests did we find the wrapper under the bed. :rolleyes2

So if they stay as they are right now - quiet with just a touch of a stomach ache - I think we will skip the vet and hope that they won't want to touch chocolate ever again. Think that will happen? Nah.

My mother's toy poodle ate a pound of Russell Stover chocolates once and she was fine. We had a lot of cleaning up to do though.

My dogs have eaten confiscated chocolate before without any ill effects. ;)

Hope all the furbabies have either gotten some "relief" or are just generally feeling better!

We woke up this morning to a terrible stench...Apparently our Sally had a rough night (and she didn't even have chocolate!). There were six piles of "something" all over the landing at the top of the steps where she sleeps.

We're still not sure what caused it (I have suspicions about new treats I bought for them) but we're keeping an eye on things today, no treats, no breakfast, and steam cleaning the carpets awaits me when I get home...
