Help solve this debate! Can you put your arms up on Space Mountain?

Okay fellow Dissers DH and I have been debating this all day long.

He insists that you can NOT put your arms up the whole time on Space Mountain without risking getting hurt. He says in the tunnels that his fingertips hit the top of the tunnel. For the record he's 5 ft. 11 in....so not a giant.

I know I have held my arms up the entire time but I'm only 5 ft. so I doubt I would hit anything.

So tell me folks...is it really that risky to hold your hands up the whole time? Anyone care to prove one of us wrong?

DH is 6'0" and rides with his arms in the air every time. For the record, he still has all of his fingers firmly attached in their proper locations.

AS with pp's DH, I too am 6', always ride arms out, & have all 10 digits to type time.

I'm pretty sure you can put your hands up on the ride -- beyond the first drop -- but not necessarily in the tunnels before the ride.

Otherwise, there WOULD be bits of fingers and hands laying about the track at every head-chopper.

Turns out they spent so much time cleaning up all the loose fingers and hands from the floor, they decided it would just be easier to reconfigure the ride allowing more clearance. They haven't lost one since it reopened.

you can easily touch the tops of the tunnels. I am 5'7 and I can easily reach them.

I've learned that you can also be rewarded for doing so with a nice static electrical shock when doing so!

Sounds crazy, I know, but several years ago (pre-refurb?) I had my hands up in the tunnels (I am 5'8") and the tips of my fingernails were sheared off in a blunt fashion...go figure!

Tried putting my arms up once and my back paid the price for the next 3 days. You get tossed around like a dog with a chew toy.

In the tunnels, you can easily touch.

The rest of the track is pretty close, but there is enough clearance. We were stuck on it a couple years ago, at a "stopping station" along the track. Lights came on, and after about 5 minutes a CM came along and gave us a push to finish off the ride. Lights remained on and I could easily see the clearance. It did seem very close, but there was plenty of clearance.

I've ridden it with the lights on (during a CM special event) and I'm 5'8" and I would never dream of putting my hands up again. Wouldn't want to risk it, IMO.

You can not get hurt, can not touch. That is part of the illusion of danger on most any coaster.

I highly doubt for insurance purposes and common sense, that disney would build a coaster or any ride for that matter that would run the risk of someone losing any of their limbs

Touch the inside of the tunnel every time I ride it. The tunnel is VERY smooth inside and I just don't see how anyone could get hurt doing this. If you could get hurt, i'd think Disney would of gotten rid of that aspect of the ride a LONG time ago since thousands ride it each day and at the minimum hundreds and hundreds of people rub their hands across the tops of the tunnel at Space Mountain. I'd figure if anyone ever got hurt doing that or if there even was a better than microscopic chance of that happening, Disney legal would of had that aspect of the ride removed or have had more warning printed up than Mission Space could even dream of.

So in review, yes you can touch the tunnel top. But injury from it? PFFFFT!!!

I'm a measly 5' 4" and I can touch the top of the tunnels. It is my belief that the tunnels are the only place on the ride that has such a short clearance and that it is safe to ride with one's arms up!
