Recently purchased an older home. Lovely ceramic tile in bathrooms. Previous owners were very generous. They left me many years of soap scum! :lmao: Yep, its true...must laugh...not scream with frustration! Any suggestions to clean years of soap scum?

Soft Scrub works the best for me.

I too.. years of scum came with my tub. I tried many products, and Soft Scrub was the best I've found so far for my tub.

I like Tilex Soap Scum best.

I LOVE Lysol bathroom cleaner!!!!! You just spray, wait a few mins and then wipe off. No scrubbing, just wipe off (with a paper towel).

I vote for comet! I use that and a sponge and the little bit of grab with its graininess works great

I too would use the Magic Eraser, I love that thing. Or maybe vinegar, I used to use vinegar for my shower door with soap scum.

Magic Eraser. We bought our house when it was 23 years old, and the owners left us years of soap scum on tile too. I tried literally everything from bleach to comet to a scum buster (scrub brush driven by an electric motor :lmao: ) and NOTHING worked until Mr. Clean Magic Eraser came out. It has taken lots and lots of Magic Erasers, but the soap scum did come off.

Make a paste of vinegar and baking soda, it will polish off no problem and you won't have the fumes. :thumbsup2

Personally I love scrubbing bubbles. Spray it on and wait for a few minutes and wipe with a wet rag/towel. :)

We had the WORST soap scum due to hard water, and I had tried everything...pastes and soaks of vinegar, baking soda, magic eraser, CLR, tilex, a scraper, you name it. The only thing I have found to really, really work without giving myself carpal tunnel from scrubbing was Bar Keeper's Friend Liquid. I swear I almost cried when I saw how well it was working on our shower.

Good luck to you, it's a major pain!

I just did both our bathrooms with rubbing compound that you use on your cars. Removed years of scum in each bathroom in about 30 minutes each, Make sure you use straight rubbing compound and not the one that polishes or you will slip in the tub or shower.

Another tip to keep the soap scum down and keep your bathroom sink clean is to put car wax on the tile walls and inside the sink. Don't do the bottom of the tub or shower or you will fall. Works like a charm. A janitor told me about both tricks several years ago and they have worked for me.

I have had good luck with Prell shampoo! The old green stuff - just squeeze it on and let it sit a while, then rub it off with warm water.

(But I am going to try the Magic Eraser too, it might be faster & less messy.)

That's an awesome idea!

I 2nd the waxin of the sides of tub an shower don't do floor tho i just use what ever car wax I have on hand an do it about every 6 months or so.

Now if tile or sides of tub or shower is already rough with no shine the finish is prolly already worn off an the wax won't do much good.

I also clean with tilex with wax in it gives the shower an tub walls a bit of protection each time I clean

To keep the shower area looking good at all times, we simply dry it down after EVERY use. Then once a week or so, I use a spray tile cleaner (I do this while I am in the shower and everything is wet). Never a problem with soap scum or mold and it always looks great.

When we bought our last home the shower stall had so much scum I could've chiseled it off! I tried everything mentioned above to no avail ( except the Prell ) and then bought some "Kaboom". I'm sure it's really harsh but that scum came right off with NO elbow grease required.---Kathy
