I just called Disney Reservations to make changes to my room request. (PO) I then asked to make a reservation for Sunset Safari. I was told that "if you are not staying at Concierge level at Animal Kingdom, you cannot make a reservation for this feature". Has anyone experienced this?
I want to surprise my friend going with me and this puts a big damper on the surprise.
TurnR@TheMouseHouse, welcome to the Dis. The others are correct, the Sunset Safari is only for concierge guests of the AKL. However, if you want to buy out all 8 seats for a personal safari, you might be able to do that (it's been done in the past).
There are many special things that you can experience at WDW without being a concierge guest. How 'bout dinner at Victoria & Albert's? Dinner at the California Grill? Dinner at any number of fine dining establishments inside the theme parks?

As you can see, the sky really is the limit at Walt Disney World. You'll forget all about that ol' safari dinner if you book any one of the fun things mentioned up above.
