Help !!!!!!

Ok I need some "BASIC" tips on shooting some Friday night football shots of my son. I usually use the auto sports setting and that works fine until the sun goes down and then the pictures blur.

Any tips would be appreciated.

I have a Canon Rebel XT 350D with a 50mm and a 300mm lens
and a monopod.

you need to put it into AV mode, set the apeture to 1600, open the apeture as far as it goes, then you need to make sure the shutter speed is at least 1/300 if it goes below that you need to zoom out till your at 1/focal lenght, might have problems getting to this with the 300 as it is probably about f/5.6 wide open at 300 and HS lights tend to not be very good.

I posted a similar question over on another forum. The question was specific to my Sony A100, but the info I got on the thread was very good general info:

Some of the guys over there throw around some serious prices, for the lenses they recommend. But they're being truthful in what you're likely going to get from your current lenses.

I'm shooting my kids at half time and I'm finding with the equipment I have, I'm fairly limited when it comes to fast movement. A faster lens would help, but that's not in the budget at this point.

One thing you could consider, if you're able to get on the field, would be to use a flash. That was suggested to me and I suspect it would help, but I can't use a flash during the band show, so I have not played with that yet.

your coach would probably be less than thrilled with a flash going off as well....

and it is true on the lenses, the one I got was pretty expensive, but I can get the pictures.... 70-200 f/2.8 the sigmas are good and about half the price

Thanks for all of the tips, I'll they them and hopefully post some at the game this week
