I'm in charge of running the Cub Scout meeting next week and I don't know what to do. It has to be some kind of science experiment. They've already done the vinegar/baking soda reaction thing. I want it to be something really cool that they probably haven't seen/done before. BTW they are 10 years old. Any ideas?

get one 2- liter of diet soda (any brand) and a roll or box of mentos. put the soda bottle on the ground (OUTSIDE), open the bottle and QUICKLY drop 2 mentos in-RUN!!!!! the chemical reaction causes the soda to shoot up and out of the bottle like a geyser.

dd did this for school (with a test run at home that drenched me cuz i did'nt believe it would do much :rotfl2: well a liter of soda all over me 20 seconds later and i was impressed).

That's cool too, but we have our meetings in the cafeteria of DS's school and they probably wouldn't like that. :teeth:

How about something slightly Disney related? From time to time I've seen posts about things you can use to clean pennies (so you will have shiny pennies to use in the penny presses at WDW). There is a web page where a guy documents some experiments he did to figure out why taco sauce works so well to clean pennies. He goes through a step-by-step process, trying different products (taco sauce, ketchup, tabasco sauce, salt, vinegar) until he finally identifies the specific combination of ingredients in the taco sauce that make this work:

This sounds so much fun and my ds would love it. I have a few questions for you. Does it have to be diet soda?
Can it be any flavor mentos?
How far do we need to be?
How much time to we have to get far away?

I asked my DH for ideas and he came up with this suggestion. You can make a battery out of a lemon, a galvanized nail (very important that it's galvanized -- because those are coated in zinc which is what makes this work) and a penny. If you string about 4 of them together, you can generate enough current to light up a little LED. Here's one of many websites showing this experiment:

For this experiment you will need some lengths of wire with "aligator" clips on each end to connect everything up and some LEDs. You can probably find what you need at Radio Shack. There is even a video available to show you what to do: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-6226504780579469841
