Please some advise on retrieving my vacation photos.

I’ve downloaded about two thirds of my photos
but the down load stopped and said the rest of the images
were of an unrecognizable format!:scared1:
But I can see them on the camera viewer -
and I did not change any settings.:scared1:
I have no Idea what happen - but I like to retrieve
the rest of my photos.:headache:
And suggestion of a workaround.
Thanks.

If you can still view all of the pictures on the camera, then they're probably OK and the fault is probably with the downloading-from-the-camera software.

What type of camera?
What type of memory card?
How are you transferring?

Try transferring the photos via the camera's USB cable, using regular ol' "my computer" or "windows explorer" rather than the camera maker's proprietary software.

Many (most, I think) Canons don't behave like a USB external drive when plugged in, some have an option to make them work that way - if so, set it (why Canon does this is beyond me, nobody else does and it's just a headache); of course, if it's not a Canon, ignore this paragraph. :)

If it still says it, right-click the drive letter and go into Properties, then the Tools tab, and hit the top "check now" buttons to check it for errors. That may help if there are some lost clusters or similar problems.

If/when you have retrieved your photos, format the card in your camera and fill it up with photos that you don't care about and transfer the full card to your PC to make sure that it is working 100% again. If you get errors, then the card is probably bad; most have lifetime warranties so you can probably get it replaced for the cost of shipping the bad one back.

And you are transferring through the camera? Or do you have a card reader?

I find it easiest to transfer with a card reader, just drag and drop.

Are you using a card reader? or transfering directly from the camera? If transfering directly from the camera, how is the battery life for the camera? Transfering from the camera can take a lot of battery life.

It could also just be a software issue. Have you tried shutting down the computer and restarting. Even with a Mac you should be able to find the files on the SD card without using the camera's software. Treat the camera as an external hard drive or a floppy disk or CD that hold files. Try transfering the files that way.

I have had issues like this with iPhoto in the past. I had to drag and drop the files onto the hard drive. This is one of the reasons I stopped using iPhoto.
