Help, question about loss of smell and taste

Ok, so my husband just had a septoplasty this past week and he cannot smell or taste anything. He is SO depressed and worried that his sense of smell and taste will never come back. Any one else heard of this sort of thing? I am really worried about his state of mind. I hope that this is a temporary thing.

I got this from my plasic surgeons web page. Maybe this will help out some.

"Swelling after surgery often impairs access of the molecules to the nerve endings. If the odor molecules cannot get to the nerve endings, odors can be lost. Most swelling resolves over several days but further reduction occurs over weeks. In most cases septoplasty is done to enhance the air passage through the nose. Therefore in most cases, smell and the world of odors are opened for that patient."

I know someone who has not smelled for 30 years. He said that you don't really notice how much smell is related to taste until you don't have it.

It's more often temporary as was posted, but can be permanent. THere have been studies that show Septoplasty and rhinoplasty rarely lead to permanent loss of smell or taste.

It is a "side effect" of the surgery, but I hope he gets his back, My face is permanently numb from neck surgery so is my neck and it is a pain in the behind to deal with. I know it is not the same, but they told me if I had no feeling by the end of 3 weeks then I would not have it for life, I think he should contact his doctors and let them know if he has not already done so.

Sorry that your husband has to go through this. I can fully feel his depression. I lost my ability to smell and taste after chemo. I know this damage will last the rest of my life because the ending of my nerves in hands,feet,and mouth are destroyed permanently.
But I can feel his pain and boy the times I wish I could just taste an egg or a cup of coffee.

Thank you for all your responses. He ate a burger today at Mickey Ds and he said that he could slowly start to taste it. So I guess that it will just take time to get it completely back. Really makes you realize just how much you do take for granted unitlit is gone.

I have lost most of my taste due to chemo also. it will come back eventually.

I found one good thing from it though, last december I freaked out all the CMs at Club Cool by drinking large amounts of Beverly without gagging.

the look on everyones faces almost made what the chemo does to me worth it for a little while.

I hope that things work out for your husband. My Father had this surgery, a few years ago, and he's never regained his sense of smell or taste. It really bothered him at first, but he's gotten used to it for the most part. Again, I really hope that things work out for your husband.
