I've not had any trouble using old tickets before. We have had current tickets become demagnatized. A trip to GS fixed all.
Ao others have said, WDW just added a new system. We were able to get our old passes checked at our resort last trip at teh concierge desk. I think they said they could not make any changes, but she could read them for us.
Now originally it rad to me that you already brought the tickets to wDW and they said no go - but if you are only saying they can't do anything over the phone, that has usually been our expereince as well. (though at one point a phone number was posted here; I guess it no longer works.)
Beyond that, if you get to teh gate and the ticket does not work....worst case scenario, you could just walk up to Guest relations and get a new one. Typically it doesn't take very long to get a ticket. Most folks buy tickets before they go to WDW. A few are in line each morning, and a few have to go to GR each moring (for various reasons)- but usuallythe wait is not all that bad. There's also a GR in DTD.
