So I had booked the Howard Johnson's for 6 nights in June for $889. Now I found the Carousel Inn through Bookit.com for $717 and don't know what to do. This will be our first trip to DL and would REALLY LOVE any help I can get.
Thanks in advance, Melissa

Well, I don't know about those two hotels but we just got back and stayed at the Fairfield Marriott for about $100 a night (plus $8 parking/night). I booked it through the marriott.com site. We loved the location and even with a 'non' renovated room we were very happy - clean (a must for me) and convenient. So I probably didn't help you but wanted to throw out this option. Have a magical time!

I am a newbie but was deciding between CI and HOJO and we decided upon HOJO because of their little water park they have. So if I was you I would make a pros and cons of each resort and decide upon what was important to your family -ours was a great pool for our kids.
Hope this helps :)

Thanks for the info, I am checking this out now and it looks like a really good option. It also looks really close to the parks, how long of a walk was it?

I did look at the pool area, though it looked really cool, for us it was actually a minus. Our boys are not into very much into pools and water parks, but most kids are so we were thinking it might be a little quieter at a different hotel.
Thanks for the help!

Don't know anout the CI but we walked past it everyday while staying at the Camelot last week. We did walk into the lobby one day looking for stamps. From the outside it looked fine and you can't beat the proximity to the parks! I was very fearful of The Camelot because it doesn't get much press here on the boards. HoJo seems to get alot. I was very pleased there and would not hesitate to saty there again. Hopefully someone from the boards has stayed at the CI and can give you more input.

I would definitely choose the Carousel over Hojos if cheaper and you are not that interested in kids pool....

The Carousel has good sized rooms, is about 5 minutes walk closer, all rooms have a microwave and fridge and it includes a free breakfast (such as it is)...

We ended up buying our own cereal and having the danishes, apples etc for lunch...

It was about a 10 minute walk there and about 15 minutes back - after a long day at the parks! It really wasn't bad at all. The hotel also has a coffee bar with breakfast items and a pizza hut for lunches and dinners (with a mini game room) on the third floor. There are lots of restaurants close by, too.

We have never stayed with the CI but have stayed mutliple times with Hojo...the pros for Hojo...they don't have the "hotel tax" that closer hotels do...I think about an extra $15 a night. Free Wifi in all the rooms, the hotel is a 7 minute walk...well for my family anyway. We don't stay on the side of the road with all the restaurants...we change over to DLR side right away @ Mimi's cafe and it isn't as crowded either. Hojo has nice clean rooms, great cleaning staff, reception is always extremely helpful.

Did you check out the "entertainment rate" for Hojo? You can get a standard room for $59 a night:thumbsup2...with the entertainment book. Just call "in-house reservations" directly and they will let you know...also look online with Hojo under "join in, discussion boards" and you can see if you dates are available. The water park has never been busy when we were there...hot tub, water features and regular pool at back of property. Also, I think all rooms come with a fridge and coffee maker...we didn't appreciate coffee though...you can get a room with a microwave for an upgrade of $15 more a night. We did because if you bring home leftovers it is always nice to reheat them:) Also, free parking if you are driving there.

Cons...no breakfastpopcorn::...that has always been a big minus for our family on a budget :( but there is a store there onsite where you can get cereal, milk, bread...etc etc...so pretty much whatever you need. It is a little walk but there is also the ART shuttle for a nomimal fee if you are tired at the end of the day. we never used it because we just walked.

Good luck with your search! Have a magical trip:wizard:

We have stayed at the Carousel and would stay there again. Rooms were clean and the location is great. I believe they were just redoing the rooftop pool but I'm not sure if this was completed. We just got back from the Desert Inn and Suites. These rooms were great as well and as close as the Carousel. Another great option. Both have breakfast rooms. Desert Inn has an indoor pool and hot tub which would be nice after a long day at the park. I know people love HoJo's but the long walk at the end of a long day at the park is not for me!

We stayed at the HoJo end of July last summer. This was our first stay here & we loved it!! It's approx. an 8min walk......quite enjoyable if you stay on the DL side.......almost empty sidewalks. We had a park view room in Bldg 1, the room was huge. 2 queen beds & 2 cribs, lots of counter area, table & 2 chairs. We had a small balcony we could watch the fireworks from. I have pictures of the grounds & room here:

I stayed at the Carousel Inn & Suites, early March of this year. The rooms are the standard 2 queen rooms, not as spacious as the HoJo's Premium View Rooms. There was a small table & 2 chairs, but very little counter space. The one nice bonus to these rooms, was a sliding door to separate the bathroom area from the bedroom area (if you had early risers). I never got to the pool or the breakfast, so can't comment on either.....sorry. The Carousel is just a minutes walk from the pedestrian crossing to the parks. Here's pictures of the room:

Hope that helps some!!
I will say that both motels were clean, the beds very comfortable with extra bedding, employees at both places were very helpful & friendly. The only thing to keep in mind, if you will have a car, parking was free at the HoJo & parking at the Carousel is Valet parking only with a daily fee ($8 I think per day).

HOJO has been getting some very negative press on DIS lately, so you may want to read up on the changes they have made that are making people unhappy. You may also want to check and be sure that your current reservation with them in not going to incur a cancellation fee (I can't remember if it was reservations made after Feb 1 or March 1 that now include a cancellation fee no matter how far out you cancel). That policy right there makes me unwilling to book there.....while I've never completely cancelled a trip, I have needed to change start or end dates on occasion as life horns in on my trip (or frees me up for more days, lol).....and being that locked in to exact dates months in advance is unacceptable.

If the pool isn't that important to your family, and in fact feels like a negative because of the potential for noise (which seems would increase as you get closer to the hot weather)....and the other place is cheaper, then it would be pretty easy choice for me. I'm all for saving money without losing any amentities that matter to my family.

We have been staying at the Extended Stay lately...because walking to the park is NOT important to us. Staying here is inexpensive without having to worry about Entertainment Rates or specific rooms or whatever. It's clean, has a kitchenette (2 burner stove, sink, full size fridge, microwave, pots and pans, plates, cups, bowls, etc) and if we choose to walk we can go across the street to the Toy Story lot and board the bus. Yes, an extra 5 minutes to hop on a bus and ride over, but we save about 40% over what your rate is....so that's worth waking up 5 minutes earlier, or missing out on 5 minutes in the rope drop line.

Making a list of pros and cons of the two hotels should help you with narrowing down which is the better choice for your family. It sounds like as far as cleanliness and size the hotels are about equal...price is a little better at one...sounds like HOJO has no breakfast, but the breakfast at CI didn't cut it for some families...and the pool doesn't matter to your family. So based on those criteria, CI sounds better for your family due to price and breakfast.

Thanks for the help!

You are right about that. My kids are older, (grandkids actually) and they prefer a more grown-up pool. They loved the Sheraton, (one that looks like a castle) quiet and beautiful. Also their own shuttle to nd from the park.
