Oh My Goodness!!

I am freaking out right now. I just baked fresh brownies to take to a friends tonight. I made 2 batches, put them on the counter where I know he can't get to well.....

He jumped up and ate one within seconds!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am so upset because can't chocolate kill a dog???!!

We had to put our little Sassy to sleep 2 weeks ago and I will just be beside myself if something happens to Bandit.

Please help:scared1:

Dont panic !!!

A little bit of chocolate will not harm the dog. Its when they are continiously fed chocolate it starts to poison them.

Keep an eye on him/her but im sure it will be fine :thumbsup2

It's doubtful that there is enough pure chocolate in a brownie to even make the dog sick. My 10 lb Chinese crested has eaten a brownie before (after we went to bed, he climbed up on the counter, removed the plastic wrap and had a midnight snack) and nothing happened to him at all.

Obviously, your brownies are very good.

Call your vet. They will tell you what to do.

Ruby once snuck into my suitcase and ate a whole block of fudge from the Main Street Bakery (which I was very upset about because it was my only piece.:lmao:) We called the vet and they told us what to do (which escapes me at the moment). She was fine.

I would call just for the peace of mind.

ETA, I'm very sorry about Sassy.

How old is the dog?

More than likely, he'll be completely fine. My dog loves brownies and we always give her one if we make some. :)

My friend's dog (1yo Golden Retriever), however, at a half a tray of brownies w/heavy frosting Sunday night, and threw up several times yesterday (while we were there eating dinner - good thing we're dog lovers, LOL).

Your dog probably won't even throw up. Just keep an eye on her.

PS sorry about your other pet. :flower3:

Because of the size of a husky, the chances that one brownie will hurt him are very small. I found this when I looked up how much chocolate will seriously hurt/kill a dog. My dad used to let my Chocolate Lab lick our ice cream bowls when we were done with them, whether the ice cream was chocolate or not and she never got sick (and I've given ice cream with chocolate chips in it to both Kody, who is 110 pounds and Hurley, who is 70-80 pounds when my roommate wasn't around with no negative effects.)
* White chocolate: 200 ounces per pound of body weight. It takes 250 pounds of white chocolate to cause signs of poisoning in a 20-pound dog, 125 pounds for a 10-pound dog.
* Milk chocolate: 1 ounce per pound of body weight. Approximately one pound of milk chocolate is poisonous to a 20-pound dog; one-half pound for a 10-pound dog. The average chocolate bar contains 2 to 3 ounces of milk chocolate. It would take 2-3 candy bars to poison a 10 pound dog. Semi-sweet chocolate has a similar toxic level.
* Sweet cocoa: 0.3 ounces per pound of body weight. One-third of a pound of sweet cocoa is toxic to a 20-pound dog; 1/6 pound for a 10-pound dog.
* Baking chocolate: 0.1 ounce per pound body weight. Two one-ounce squares of bakers' chocolate is toxic to a 20-pound dog; one ounce for a 10-pound dog.

try not to worry, chances are, as pp's said, it wasn't enough to do real harm. Call your vet asap and see what they tell you to do. good luck!

It's true that chocolate is toxic to dogs and that you should never give it to them intentionally. However, given the size of your dog and the fact that it was a brownie and not something with a higher concentration of chocolate, he should be fine. I'd probably call the vet and explain exactly how much he ate, but I suspect he won't suffer any ill effects.

Oh my goodness, you sound like me when I dropped a glob of chocolate ice cream right in front of our husky and it was gone before I was done gasping about it! :lmao: I called the vet in a panic and they said it would be fine; according to them, at 80 pounds she would have had to have a LOT more before they'd worry. :goodvibes

I'm sorry to hear about your Sassy, too!

Thank you everyone!

I did call the Vet and they said that it isn't good, but that since he is a big dog. He should be fine. Just to watch him to see if he does anything. He may throw up or need to go outside in a jiffy.....

He knows he is in trouble though. He is hooked up but I do have a dish of water by in in case he needs it.

I'll let him go in a bit but he needs to have his doggy time out.

Thank you again everyone

Don't worry. My dog of a long time ago ate an entire pound of chocolate covered peanuts and was fine.

And that would likely be IF the white "chocolate" was even made with cocoa butter, which from reading ingredients is unlikely in America.

OP, we had malamutes, and our first male once carefully and quietly (my mom finally realized that the slight scraping sound she was hearing was the cake plate turning around bit by bit and then she rushed in) licked the homemade chocolate frosting off an entire, 2 tier, homemade chocolate cake, and he was totally fine. For whatever reason, at that point no one was talking about chocolate being bad for dogs, and the only concern in our household was...how fast my mom could make new frosting for the cake for my b'day party in a couple hours from that moment.

I still haven't told the friends who were at my party about that...:rolleyes1

Like everyone else said, that little bit of chocolate won't hurt your dog, especially one as big as yours.

In the future, if your dog eats something he shouldn't, you can give a teaspoon or two of hydrogen peroxide. But make sure you do it outside because they WILL throw up! :thumbsup2

Bandit, huh? Fitting name. :rotfl: How's he doing. Should be fine!! :thumbsup2

Our black lab growing up ate an ENTIRE bag of Hershey's Kisses. We didn't even know it until we saw something glinting in her teeth -- the foil wrappers! Didn't even faze her.

Our jack russell ate about 1/2 a Costco-size bag of M&M's. She threw up a few times, but otherwise was fine.

I doubt one brownie is going to hurt your dog.

I hope Bandit's okay, sounds like he will be.

But - the post about the Hershey's Kisses made me think about a black lab we had that ate all the aluminum icicles off the lower branches of the Christmas tree. There was a lot of very festive, shiny poop for a day or two.:sad2:

Just keep an eye on him. My dog got into some chocolate pudding that I had thrown out and she was fine. I called the vet and the vet said some dogs can tolerate chocolate. Good luck!

Our toy poodle, who weighed about 5 or 6 pounds at the time, got into my son's Christmas stocking when we went out for a little while on Christmas day.
He ate an entire bag of hershey nuggets!:scared1: Somehow though, he was just fine. The stains on our carpet were the worst thing we had to deal with.
I guess some dogs are just more resilient than others? He's 14 now and I swear he will outlive us all...
