I know that there has been lice going around school-my neighbor and her daughter just had it too and today my dd(7) came home from school and is itching her head over and over.I have been checking her everyday for the last 2 weeks and have not seen anything and I checked her today and still I don't see any nits or bugs. She has very long medium brown hair and I know it can be hard to see but I keep looking.I don't know if she has it or not or what I should do.Anyone had it present like this first-itching but no sign of lice.Any recommendations as what to do next?

Look in her hair behind her ears for tiny white eggs. DD had the same issue a couple of years ago and I couldn't see anything until I checked there and found some eggs.

I can't remember the stuff we used to treat it but it only took 2 treatments and tons of bedding and stuffed animals getting washed to get rid of them.

Forgot to add that I used a lice comb through her hair too.

Good luck!

The actual lice bugs are very tiny, and tend to burrow under the hair, away from the light. If you use something long, like a pencil, to divide the hair into sections as you are looking, it makes it a little bit easier. The nits/eggs are the white things that adhere to the hair strands, mostly near the back of the ears or the neck. If you notice whitish specks in the hair, and you try to shake them off and they don't come off, most likely they are nits, which you need to actually scrape off with your fingers.

I didn't think my DD had them for a bit until I did some research to see exactly what I was looking for AND when I used a magifying glass and went under very bright light. They are tiny. The born ones are brown so can be hard to see on brown hair not to mention they're tiny. The eggs are white but very tiny. They won't come off easy and slide down the hair.

Good luck.

My dd itched for a full week, with me checking before I found any nits. By that point, when I treated her, I found live adult lice, nymphs and a whole bunch of nits.

Orrr...

Your daughter could be sensitive to citric acid.

Once I discovered it and switched to shampoo without it, my scalp quit itching!

Maybe it is in her head just because everyone is talking about it...I know the very thought of lice makes my head itch. :confused3

Does she have a rash or anything? It could be something completely different like an allergy.

My daughter had a very itchy head and never had lice. Selsun Blue shampoo did wonders for her itching. Good luck.

I have suffered thru 2 bouts w/ my DDs. I would be wililng to bet, with it going around school, that she has lice. NO WAY would I assume she has some sort of other shampoo problem.....you will absolutely kick yourself later when the adult bugs show up, as a previous poster said.

Some people do not like to use the harsh chemical shampoos--but if you're not one of them, then go ahead and shampoo her. Then follow all of the combing out advice listed previously.

GOOD LUCK--I feel your pain.

She hasn't been itching since friday night-I still keep checking a few times a day and still see nothing. Her scalp never got red but she was itchy in 2 spots-there was a tiny bit of dryness there with a little bit of flakiness but really little.I guess I will just keep checking her.I don't want to use chemicals without signs of lice.I have read alot about more natural remedies and might try one of them.Anyone tried any of the other things other than pesticide shampoos-like the lice md or even I have read that they use Listerine in the military.Good Housekeeping magazine had an article about a bunch of products that are safer this month-I think I might try to get one of them and use just in case.

I would desrcribe the nits as silvery tan. They are flat and half circle shaped.

one of the non-cemical things we do on DNeice was coated her hair with cheap hair gel lots of it think just like your getting hair color on your head then wrapped it with saran wrap & she slept with in her hair & we washed it out the next morning.

Try a dandruff shampoo like Selsun Blue. She may just have a dry scalp.

You can also purchase a lice comb pretty cheap and run that thru her hair. Have her shampoo her hair and use conditioner first so it is easy to get the comb thru. Get a solid white wet washcloth and after you run the comb thru the hair then wipe it on the washcloth to see if you see any specks - those could be the newly hatched lice.

I am 13 years old and I have had lice recently. I got it from using my little cousin's brush. My mom checked my head every day and to treat it we used olive oil. She smothered my hair with it and wrapped my head in seran wrap. I had to sleep in it and walk around in it for 24 hours. It stinks! So, I recommend doing it over the weekend when you have nothing to do, or take a day off school to do it. The school will understand. I think the school nurse didn't check my head very good because a few days later I found out I had it. My head is actually itching right now. It could be to just the thought of lice... hmm... I've checked my head and I have no nits. I may just have a naturally dry scalp or my shampoo is bothering it. There are many different possibilites it could be. Google 'itchy dry scalp but no lice' and there are a few skin condidtion that are on these websites. I think I may have one of them... Well, good luck. I know how it feels to have an itchy scalp all the time and it stinks. Good luck once again! I hope you figure it all out!!(: :)

If you really aren't seeing any signs of lice it may just be dry skin. It is pretty common in the winter. My dd gets a very itchy scalp and will scratch so much she bleeds. We found several itchy scalp products to help combat the problem.

It never hurts to treat... my buddy uses olive oil but it's a long slow process.

If it's dry scalp, my friend (who's also a stylist) recommends tea tree products... it's really good for your hair but it also helps with winter dry scalp issues.

Good luck!

A family I had in my day care had lice and kept coming back with it. I was feeling very itchy, but couldn't find anything (and neither could my hubby) when we checked.
I ended up calling my hairdresser and asked her to check (they see it all the time I promise and know just where and how to look and are not nearly as freaked out by it as most people are). She didn't find lice, but did find dry scalp! I wouldn't panic; and if you are comfortable with it, ask an expert!! ;)

LOL The OP was from 2008. Hopefully, she's resolved the issue by now.;)
