We're coming end of August with two teenagers. This will be our first time at Animal Kingdom. Lightning Lane bookings may change things but I'm trying to map out a general plan so we're going through the park logically. (I plan on buying LL for Flight of Passage and then grab LL for headliners as we go). Have a few questions.

  1. I'm looking at a map, and am I right that Flight of Passage is off in the corner by itself? i.e. I don't see anything else around it.
  2. My understanding is "Avatar Flight of Passage" is the actual simulator ride. What is "Pandora - The World of Avatar"? The latter being near Na'vi River Journey
  3. Similar to FOP, is anything near Navi for teens? Anything near Dinosaur for teens? These also seem kind of isolated.
  4. Anyone have a good "path" to take to cover the attractions?
  5. Any good attractions to avoid the heat? (we have Boma breakfast prior to the park so lunch/dinner will be QS)

Thanks. Not sure if this park is smaller and so things just seem farther away? Or if it is really spread out.

The maps are not super detailed, so none of those things are off by themselves as they may appear to be. Pandora The World of Avatar is the land (like Asia, Africa etc.) were FOP and Navi River Journey are located. There is also a shop, drinks stand, dining and so one located within the World of Avatar. Not sure what you mean by anything for teens (rides/attractions, shops, snacks). Dinosaur is at Dinoland area, so they might like that ride. It really depends on the teens and what they like. I have teens of my own and they definitely do not like the same types of attractions, lol, so it's not a blanket question that I can answer easily.

Things are more spread out in Animal Kingdom as compared to something like Magic Kingdom, but probably closer than a place like Epcot, where attractions are fairly spread out as well. But it's not like you're ever walking somewhere and there's nothing to see or do. In fact, Animal Kingdom is filled with a treasure trove of Imagineering magic if you keep your eyes peeled ;)

Thanks for the reply. When I do google search, it says 17 min walk from FOP to Navi...and Navi seems like the next closest attraction. Thanks...so things within World of Avatar.
For teens, they are pretty open, but I thought there was something with a sandbox or playland or fossils near Dinosaur that wouldn't be for them.

It might not be worth it to be Genie+ for AK. Other than FoP, most of the rides can be ridden without it. The park does close earlier than other parks and some of the attractions - such as the animal trails and safari close even earlier than the park.

There are lands in the park, all with at least one ride.

Pandora has FoP and Navi. Navi gets a bad rap as boring but it's a beautiful, peaceful boat rid. If your teens are thrill seekers, they might not like it but I love it. FoP is a simulator ride, it can make some people a little sick. There is a quick service restaurant there and a walk up snack/drink stand and one shop. There are snack carts and souvenir carts. It is a pretty land.

Africa is a pretty cool land. It has Safari for a ride which can get long lines and is usually better early in the morning since the animals tend to be more active then. There is a walking trail there - Gorilla Falls which you can walk at your own pace. There is one gift shop, one full service restaurant and a QS place. There are a few small snack stands. Festival of the Lion King Show is there. There are also street performers. Rafiki Planet Watch is there as well. You take a train to a petting zoo and an inside area that has a place where you can draw your own animation and if you are lucky see actual vet procedures.

Asia has Expedition Everest and Kali River Rapids. I would think the teens would want to do both. There is a walking trail there as well that has tigers and such. There is one sit down restaurant Yak and Yeti and one QS, Yak and Yeti. There are a number of food and drink carts and stands. There is also a bird show and street performers. Kite Tails starts there but it's something you see from just about everywhere. On the way to DinoLand is the show Nemo, which is pretty neat.

In DinoLand there is a kiddie ride, some old fashioned carney games and Dinosaur, which is a sort of dark/thrill ride the teens would probably like. There is a QS restaurant there and a kids playground.

Discovery Island is right when you walk into the park. The Tree of Life is there, which is a huge tree with carvings all over it, it has two trails that walk around it. There are a number of gift shops, 2 QS restaurants and a number of food carts. There is a Starbucks there. On the way from Discovery Island to Pandora a TS restaurant - Tiffins and one of the best lounges WDW has Nomad Lounge with has small bites and drinks. There is a cute kind of kids show there called It's Tough to Be a Bug.

All throughout AK there are side trails with animals and a number of spots with monkeys.

I'm sure I've left out a lot but that's AK in a nutshell.

There is a lot of walking at AK (at least the way we visit), so it doesn’t seem like a small park at all.

FOP and Navi are close to one another. Definitely not a 17 minute walk (even for me who uses a cane!)

We always do the Gorilla Falls walk after riding Kilimanjaro Safari. The Lion King Festival is a good place to beat the heat (and sit down for a while).

QS places we love are Satuli Canteen in the Avatar area and Flame Tree Barbecue in Africa area.

Best Table Service is Yak and Yeti, but reservations are difficult to get.

No way is Navi a 17-minute walk from FoP. More like 5 minutes, if that.

Just to be clear, FoP is an ILL$ (Individual Lightning Lane), not a Genie+ attraction, so that's a separate fee from G+. There's usually a long line for FoP, so if you can afford it, ILL$ is worth it here.

We sometimes do DAK like this:

pre-1) At 7 a.m., we book an ILL$ for FoP for late afternoon.

1) Safari--sometimes we book G+ for this and sometimes not. We love doing it first thing because sometimes we can do it twice in a row. It's always different and always, for us, worth doing more than once a day. Note that KS doesn't open when the park opens for early entry and it closes before the park closes. The ride is always different because the animals do what they want.

(2) Gorilla Falls area--a walking attraction after the safari. Well worth it if you love animals.

(3) This is a toss-up. Sometimes it's lunchtime by then and we go to Yak & Yeti for lunch. If not, we might do Kali River Rapids at this point--usually a G+ isn't necessary here, although in the summer it might be. Not sure. We don't go in the summer!

(4) Now for sure it's lunchtime.

(5) If we haven't been in a while we'll do the Maharajah Jungle Trek, also a walking attraction. Great to see the tigers and bats (love the bats) and some cool birds. We don't do Expedition Everest (EE), but now would be a good time for that. If you have G+, you would've made your EE G+ after you tapped in on the safari.

(6) Dinoland. If you have G+, you can make your Dino G+ after you get off EE. Your teens may or may not like Dino. It's not really a thrill ride but it is dramatic. After you tap into Dino, make your G+ for Navi. The rest of Dinoland? Unless your kids like playing county fair-type games (and you have to pay for these), then there's probably nothing else there for them or you except maybe dessert.

(7) Pandora. If it's worked out perfectly, then the ILL$ for FoP is before the G+ for Navi. We love Navi, but your teens might think it's a huge bore. Depends. Navi is about the mood, not the thrill. There is zero thrill altho the animatronic of the shaman at the end is pretty amazing.

There is a lot of walking involved, especially if you do both the gorilla area and the jungle trek.

People who love EE do that first thing in the morning, at early entry, since most people at that time are headed to Pandora to ride FoP, which, btw, gets an immediately huge, long line and you'd be near the back of it unless you were at the front of the pack and ran like crazy when they let people in.

If you would really enjoy Expedition Everest, then you could do that first and perhaps get to ride it more than once without much of a line.

HTH.

@loves to dive , super helpful. Thanks.
We already have Genie+ purchased for our entire trip...and anything that saves time waiting outside helps.
And yeah, we'll be purchasing FOP ILL$ as a separate fee.

I'm actually looking forward to Navi. I have some health issues so need to avoid certain things, but this is one I can ride and enjoy. (For example, my family will ride but I will be skipping Dinosaur, Safari, River Rapids, and EE - things that bump a lot and are rough). Ok...so FOP and Navi are together. @Jonfw2 , thanks for the tip about single rider on EE. Pretty sure my kids will want to go on that.

Good tip about Safari and the heat. Is Nemo show inside? Will check that out as well as Lion King Festival.

@Miffy , thanks for giving an example of your plan. That really helps. We won't be arriving for park opening as we have Boma breakfast (as early as I could book but park opens 30 minutes later) but will head over as soon as we are done.

Yes, both Nemo and Lion King are inside. Nemo has just re-opened and is a little over 20 min. I think it's a cute show, there are lots of videos of it. Lion King is so good. Lots going on and they have finally put some elements that they weren't doing since the before times.

Sounds great. Will check them both out.
