I'm doing all my packing today and now my DH says he doesn't want to lug a suit to Florida (In his defense we are driving down and first going to spend a week at my parents place on the beach so we will be gone a total of 2 1/2 weeks and things are getting tight in our van)..anyway he wants to know if EVERYONE goes very formal? Can he get away with a pair of Dockers, white buttoned shirt with tie? I am only wearing a simple black skirt/matching top with a pair of black sandals. My daughter will wear her Easter dress and my son a pair of slacks with a white short sleeved shirt with tie. I just dont want to kick ourselves when we get onboard that we are sticking out like a sore thumb. What do you think? Thanks :-)

We went on our first cruise last July and had alot of fun with the entire night of Formal Night. I had bought a nice black suit and it doubled for both formal and semi-formal nights. I just wore a tux shirt and bowtie for formal night and a dress shirt and tie for semi. The fun of formal night flows into the Mickey's awards after dinner (or before depending on your seating time) and they really do roll out the red carpet!!!! Find the room...it's worth it!! :cool2:

We did the whole tux - formal gown thing on our first cruise and we were definately in the minority. This time I'm taking black slacks and a gold and black lace top for semi - and a silver sequined top for formal. DH and both DS are wearing khaki dockers with dress shirts and ties.

On our first cruise I could count the number of men in tuxes on one hand. Most wore either a business suit or just a shirt/tie. I don't think you will stand out (in a bad way) at all.

Our tablemates on the first cruise wore the same out fits to dinner every night - including formal/semi-formal nights. :rolleyes2

Without a jacket you will fell out of place on formal and semi-formal night. Not everyone wheres a tux, a lot do though, but everyone definately has a suit on.

My dh didn't wear a suit on Formal night. He wore a pair of black pants, white button down with a disney tie. He didn't feel out of place either. He was very comfortable. He will not wear a suit unless he is going to a funeral. He is very hot natured and just is not comfortable in a suit. He is also the type of person that doesn't care what other people think. We did follow the dress code, no shorts & such. But, no where does it say you HAVE to wear a suit on formal night.

DH stayed dressed for pictures and dinner, then it was back to shorts. I was happy with that!

This trip he is taking one pair of tan dress pants & a pair of black. Those will work all week. If he spills, we will have them washed.

:goodvibes

My DH does not like to dress up either.. I did manage nice black dress pants, and beige ones for formal, and semi-formal nights... We paired these with nice shirts, pressed (looks better :) )

He also really does not care what people think... We followed the dress code, and always (i thought) looked spiffy.. :goodvibes

Our thoughts are "live and let live"...

We were on the March 4th cruise. We went all out for formal night ,tux and ball gowns. It was fun but we were the best dressed there. I felt it depended on your own people. As long as you all dress nice and somewhat the same it is fine. There was all shapes and sizes every night. If you ware a tie you will be middle of the road and fine.

This will be our third Disney Cruise and Formal Night has always been a special treat for us. The chance to see my DS12 dressed in something other than baggy jeans and a t-shirt is an added plus! My DH has achieved the rank of Chief Master Seargent in the USAF and this year I am insisting that he wear his "dress mess"(that's a military tuxedo) on the cruise for formal night! He's worked hard to achieve his rank and dang it all, he's just so handsome in it!

The opportunity to have us all dressed up and get a nice picture taken is really an added bonus! I say go for the gusto if the DH doesn't mind dressing up!

Congratulations to your DH in achieving his rank and I agree he should wear his "dress mess" on formal night. It's quite an achievement and something to be very proud of.

As stated before, men wearing tuxes are definitely in the minority....However, I would recommend wearing the same "darkish" navy blue suit for both formal and semi formal nights...just accessorize them differently with shirts and ties....

If you want a more casual experience, opt for Topsiders on formal and semi formal nights.....You would really miss out on something special though.....

No not everyone dresses formal. There were very few guys in tuxes on our last cruise. I wore a pair of black slacks and a white blouse...thats about as dressy as I get. I would never show up wearing jeans or shorts but I did not feel out of place wearing what I did. This year we are going to try to get Palo ressies for that night. I really would prefer to not have a formal or semi formal night but there are people who love it. One guy on our cruise for fomal night wore a red tank top with his hairy back sticking out of it and an old pair of sweats...my did he look handsome!
My 5 year old has already asked if she can eat with the kids club on formal night so she won't have to get dressed up!

Eeeew! My, that created quite the lovely visual in my mind :scared1:

Thanks for this great info. I have a brother who does not like to dress up that will be very happy now!!

We are extremely proud! The dress mess uniform is really quite a sight to behold. All crisp and shiny!

The consensus then here is anything goes! Soup to nuts! (like the nut in the red tank top and black sweat pants..ewww, my eyes :earseek: )

No one is going to keep you out of the dining rooms for dressing as you see fit.

So cruisers, dress up or down as you like!

Happy Cruising!

If you are taking the 7-night cruise, then I would try and talk him into maybe packing that suit. We did the 3-night Wonder, and even though there was no formal night on our cruise, there were still a lot of people who did dress up. I will say there were more ladies than men who were dressed, but there were those men who did wear the nice suits, and I did see a couple of men in tuxes. I think that the majority of those who did dress up were the ones who did Palo, but judging by the way people were dressed on the 3-night, I would think it would be even more dressier on a 7-nighter.

I share his sentiment exactly. It is listed as a formal evening, and Disney made that decision when they could easily have decided not to have a formal night. For example, there is no formal night on the 3 or 4 night cruises, but RCCL does have formal night on a 4 night cruise. And there are many, like the military example, for whom dressing up is a treat and part of a fancy special event, and on a premium priced cruise that may be a trip of a lifetime, and part of the experience of a formal night is the overall ambience of the event. If the overall effect was not part of the event, there would never be any reason to have a formal night. If someone can't do a suit, or even a blue blazer, with their slacks and tie, then one of the other options for dinner is available and more appropriate. I do think everyone has the right to enjoy a DCL vacation, no question, but smokers have to accomodate to time and place guidelines, and when the guideline is "formal", then going against that is not considerate of the other guests. Its not like DCL sprung this on you after you boarded--formal night is advertised, and it would be hard to imagine someone who did not know about formal night during the time period when their ressie was fully refundable. If you sign up for a cruise with a formal night, and dont wish to dress in something that fits within the already loosened definition of formal, please enjoy topsiders, or enjoy the privacy of room service, or palo's, or perhaps relax and have something from pluto's.

I know I may get flamethrowers to target me, but it is not anything goes--if it was, they wouldn't call it formal or semi formal. The true bottom line is that one need not wear a tux. I think the guidelines described in DCL's own materials are clear, and fair. I understand some folks just aren't into dressing up as a firm part of their lifestyle--and a bahamian cruise won't make youdo so on the 3 or 4 nighter on DCL, or even another cruise line where formal night doesn't exist, like some of the sailing ships.

Chosing my words carefully here...........I am paying for my cruise. My dh choses to wear black pants, white shirt & tie to semi-formal and formal. He is comfortable. I want to eat in my assigned dinning room. I don't look around at anyone else and judge them for what they are wearing. I have enough to take care of without judging what others are wearing. As long as someone doesn't come into the dinning room with jeans on......DON'T WORRY ABOUT IT. Keep your attention focused on your family and the fun that you paid for. As long as YOU are having a good time, what does it matter what another person that you don't even know is wearing.

Okay, I'm ready :firefight :duck:

I totally agree....

Thank You everyone for your responses. And what a mixed response it was, lol. It's not that my DH minds getting dressed in a suit (he does it often enough for work) but it was just the room in the van. But, we have solved the problem by taking the 2 back seats out and now I was giving carte blanche (scary thought) of what I can bring so I'm going to go ahead and pack the suit! I really do feel like the above posters in that if you dont feel comfortable wearing it, just dressing nicely is sufficient. We are all here for the same purpose and that is to have fun..and peoples idea of fun is different things. Some love the thought of dressing up. It's exciting and makes their night while others don't think it's much fun. Nobody is right or wrong and therefore nobody should be judged and we should all just enjoy the cruise. I just wanted to know if the majority did dress to the nines since it didn't matter to me if we dress or not I wanted to fit in. Thanks again for all the great replies. I appreciate it. :-)
