Perfect timing, our PS2 broke on Christmas Day when DS has tons of new games. Is there some kind of cleaning disk or something we can do to get this thing running again? Are they an item that can be fixed in a shop? DS is freaking out, wants us to buy a new PS2 right immediately.

Haven't heard of any cleaning disks working on anything other then disks skipping or freezing. Yes the PS2 can be taken into a shop, just go to the Sony website and look up authorized technicians in your city. You may find that fixing it is going to cost you as much as buying a whole new consule. My system stopped communicating to the controllers about when to vibrate. I took in my controllers and my system and they found that is was the system and it was going to have to be sent somewhere else and when it was all said and done it was going to cost me $179. I figured that I could live without the vibration and if it really gets to me then I will just buy an new system.

Not sure about the repair/cleaning of PS2 but, my brother is on his 2nd PS2. His 1st "broke" and, he took it into one of those "trading/used" places and got a brand new PS2, adding cash, of course.

What a rotten thing to happen on C'mas Day tho. :(

Our Xbox died fairly recently. We did try a CD head cleaning disk (the ones you use in CD players). We then determined if it was the game or the console itself.

We wound up calling Xbox support. For $50 (plus shipping cost) we sent our Xbox to Xbox support, and they reformatted the hard drive. I sent it out on Nov. 25, and we got it back about the 6th of December.

Our DS PS2 has been very tempremental lately. He now keeps a can of that computer air stuff near it, and sprays it in there. That seems to work. Don't ask me why he thought of that(only 10) but it seems to work. None of our other systems give him any problems, and believe me we have them all:rolleyes: Good luck!

Our PS 2 died about a year after we got it. Sent it to Cali to have it repaired. I want to say it cost me $120 for them to repair it. That cost included shipping back to me. Got a new "warranty" for 90 just like when you buy them in the store.

Try standing it on it's side. The laser in some of the PS2 systems comes out of alignment and sometimes that helps. If your system is out of warranty, there are instructions out on the net for cleaning & re-aligning the laser.
Some of the older systems (like ours) have problems playing the blue discs. Sony is aware of the problem but will do nothing to assist other than "Repair your out-of-warranty system for $125 plus shipping". It took about 15 minutes to re-align the laser and now we can play anything out there once again.

Ours broke about a month ago.

I called Sony and had to give them the serial number and the model number and tell them where I lived. They gave me a Repair Authorization # and told me where to ship it to and exactly what to write on the letter. I had to send it to Farmington Hills, which is about an hour and a half from here.

The repair was free and I also received a new 90 day warranty.

I had it back within 10 days, good as new!

Do you still have all of the information that came with the PS2?

Let me know if you need any phone numbers for Sony.

I wanted to add, the tech on the phone ran a diagnostic test on the PS2 while I was on the phone but could not determine what was wrong.

Dh and Ds took it apart, blew ALL the DUST off, cleaned the laser lens and it now is working. Took them about 30 minutes.
