Hi all,

need some feedback on which dates might be optimal. originally had trip planned to lake Tahoe on June 10-14 but thinking might still be cold at that time so opened that to possibility of Disneyland trip in June and LT in AUG. both date ranges meet criteria of SC pass blackout and valid for deluxe pass. so far I have the following comments

June 10-14 : grad night at CA it says, how has this been typically, early closing? less hot than Aug
except for the 10th, nothing scheduled at the convention center.
SC blockout starts on the 10th

Aug 12-16 : HOT!!??

I don't think Grad Nites typically impact closing times of the parks; DCA usually closes around 10:00 pm whether or not there is a Grad Nite scheduled. The grads do have park hopper tickets, so you'll see them in both parks during the day. In general, I've usually started seeing them arriving mid-morning. Opinions are split about how much of an impact they make on the parks (in terms of crowds, atmosphere, behavior, etc.) and whether Grad Nites should be avoided or not.

In terms of June versus August for the parks...are you a big fan of Soarin'? The new Soarin' Around the World debuts on June 17, so it would be available during your August dates, but probably not your June dates.

In theory, yes, June should be a little better than August in terms of weather, but there is really no way to know for sure. Weather is highly variable, so it might turn out that June 10-14 is unseasonably hot and August 12-16 is unseasonable cool. You can get a sense of the typical weather from HydroGuy's Detailed Weather data post and other weather sites (like weather.com).

Crowds may be lighter in August, but may not. Just like the weather it's hard to predict. Some schools go back that week, but LA schools will still be out. I like June and think it's a good time to visit. But you will miss Soarin'. They'll likely close the ride for a short while before the debut of the new movie. I think either is probably fine. Maybe make your decision based on what you want to do in Tahoe.

doh! we would like to catch the new Soarin' ride. so there's another + for the Aug trip

that was one of the rides we really like (Soarin') maybe they will have a soft opening. also we like going to sandy beach during our Tahoe trips so that's why Aug might be better because June most likely will be cooler

I wouldn't expect a soft opening because they promised Shanghai they would have X number of original attractions on opening day. That's why the ride is scheduled to debut at WDW and DL the day after Shanghai opens. Then they can claim Soarin' was an original attraction on the day Shanghai opened.

thanks for the heads up on Soarin' im not seeing it on any closure lists, but taking your word for it

Maybe you'll get lucky and they won't have to close it before debuting the new one. It was closed on weekdays for a month or two recently to make upgrades for the new ride.

looks like it might be a possibility :)

"The original Soarin’ Over California film will remain as an option on the upgraded projector system, ready to be flipped on with just the push of a button thanks to the new digital format. If the Soarin’ Around The World global film flops with American audiences, TDA has already proposed turning one theater back into the original California film while the second theater plays the Around The World movie"

Wow that is interesting and a smart move on Disney's part (if this is actually true). I wouldn't mind having a choice to watch whichever Soarin I felt like riding that day/particular time...if this is true, hopefully they will do the same in WDW.

I'd go for August. Most schools will be back in session by then which will help a bit with crowds. We went August around your suggested time in 2014 and it really wasn't awful. Crowded, yes, but manageable. We easily got FPs and did everything we wanted, most of them twice over the 5 days Plus I'd rather chew glass than be in the Parks on a Grad Nite.

But it will be hot. My advice is to stay onsite and take a pool break. We hit EMH every morning took a pool break everyday around 1 - 4-ish for two hours and headed back to the parks around 4-5ish refreshed and ready to shut them down. It was great.
