Help needed-how to keep birds from building a nest above our front porch.

We have a group of birds trying to build a nest under our overhang on the front porch-I keep knocking the material down, only to find twice as much an hour later--there is no way this nest would survive a storm. Any ideas on how to stop this before it is too late.

Put a few wads of steel wool or tin foil up there. We have a spot near our back door that the birds love and this keeps them away.

My Dad has the same problem. He puts a used can of tuna or can of something that fits in the space, fills it w/nails to keep it solid and in place and the birds have now avoided it like the plague!
