Evening all!!

DW and I are trying to get somewhat more fit and healthy, mainly so we look a lot slimmer in our next set of florida photos!!!!

I'm banging my head on the wall trying to find a decent online/downloadable meal planning/calorie counting/etc software or website that's UK-orientated, since all the US ones don't have half our foods or work on the metric system!

If necessary I'll make a database-driven one from scratch (and probably sell it on to claw back some of the hours spent doing it - i'm a web designer/developer by trade), but i'd prefer to just jump straight in without all that hassle! Calorie counting is darn important to us, so I need to be able to do it accurately.

Any help or advice would be gratefully received!

Barry

Hi I use Weight Loss Resources it is a very good site it does cost but it does work, you can get a three day trial and if you don't like it then you don't have to join.

Good luck with your search  i have to say i use a mix of us and uk based sites ( tesco, ww and the like )

I use weightwatchers. I am a member but you can also just get the esource for £15 for the first three months and £6.95 per month after that -

http://www.weightwatchers.co.uk/plan/www/etools_01.aspx

What I love about it is that you can have access to all the points values of pretty much any food, track what you've been eating, use the recipe builder to find the points values of all your homemade meals, use the community message boards and get recipes and emails with tips and inspiration. Its definitely worth a go! I honestly think ww really works and I am expected to be at my goal weight for our trip to Florida in 2 months. Not bad when you consider that I was at my heaviest I have ever been on our last holiday in June 08. My clothes that I bought last year in Florida are too big now so my Mum, who has also lost loads of weight with ww will be getting them! We are trying to get really fit for our holiday too. Good Luck :thumbsup2!

mynetdiary is quite good as you can use it with your iphone and ipod touch if you have one. You do need connection to the internet on the latter too to use it. You do have to subscribe to it.

It is USA based but it is easily added to with British produce if you wish. However all the basic unprocessed foods are there already plus branded ones.

ive been looking for uk sites for a few years but never found anything. theres many American ones, but like you said they dont always have a lot of the UK foods. however you can enter them in manually :)

you should try something like Slimming world as you dont need to track calories, just the type of food you eat. ive lost 5 stone on it so far.
i know many have great sucess with weight watchers.

good luck with whatever you decide to do.xx :wizard:

and if you do decide to try slimming world, i have spare books here that you could use.

I can't be bothered with calory counting, fad diets and slim clubs (not knocking them as some people get good results from them - just not for me) - I've just basically changed my lifestyle. So that I can not only lose weight and get fitter in the short term, but also maintain my weight and fitness in the long term.

I've changed my general diet to a more balanced healthy one (lots of veg, fruit, nuts and salads), cut done on sugar, red meat, saturated fats, drink only water at work (1.5litres per day), no in-between meal snacks or late night snacks.
I have the occasional treat but don't feel guilty about it because I'm confident that my new healthier lifestyle can handle it :)

I also take a lot more exercise - I cancelled my morning paper delivery and now walk to the shop every morning and generally walk more often (good training for WDW :) ).

So far lost over 2 stone since February so must be doing something right :)

Also feel much better as well and I'm sleeping better. DW says I snore less too!

Losing weight is not rocket science - you just need to use up more calories than you take in from a balanced diet and exercise.

A little will power (or a lot in my case!) helps too ;)

Good luck with whatever method you use :)

Thanks for all the replies... I may get around to converting the calorie carb & fat bible to a meal-tracking database....

Congrats to all on the weight loss and committing to 'the change'... we both have a long time ago and my wife has lost over a stone and a half, but her biggest problem is control with foods, so calorie counting helps her have a visual record of what's gone in, so she knows what needs to be sweated out! Also helps on a 'chocolate day' as it kerbs the cravings!

Maybe I should ask my GP if two weeks every 3 months in florida is available on prescription for exercise and weight loss hehehe
