Help. need "Name game" for 1st graders

I signed up for subbing this summer and wouldn't you know it, I got a call for the 1st 2 days. I don't know if I will have any supplies, but the teacher suggested I do a "name game" so the students could get to know each other.

I have 2 classes, about 1 hour each, about 20-25 students, k- 2 grade. One is reading, other is art. Warned teacher I was certified in Math, so not so good in art,but she said it was ok.


Help. Do you have any suggestions on what would be a good name game?? Class is on Thursday.

I teach Kdg. and the only thing I can think of is to bring in a soft ball (like those nerf kind). As you toss the ball to them, have them say their name. Tell everyone that they have to pay attention b/c they'll have to remember names. Then, once everyone says their name, toss the ball to one person and say that child's name (ie: John). Then John has to take the ball and throw it to someone and say their name. And, so forth and so on until everyone has a chance or two.

In reading ... you can do the above. Or, if you prefer, ask each child to say their name. Then, ask the child if he/she knows of a book character that shares their name. Ask if they're like that character and how or why not. Or, go around the room and ask each child their favorite book.

Have fun ... it's tough subbing on the first days of school. I remember having to sub in 6th grade Reading/LA for the first week of school!!!!

Another thing you could do but only w/the 2nd graders would be to pass around a roll of toilet paper. Ask each child to take as much or as little as they'd like. Then, once everyone has TP, they have to say one thing about themselves for each little perforated square that they have. So, if you have a kid w/6 squares, he'd have to say 6 things about himself. Funny thing is you get the "wise guy" who takes like 40 pieces and everyone gets a laugh b/c he has to come up w/40 things to say about himself. I remember doing this in a high school class and it always stuck w/me!

We have done this with many different ages, make up a list of questions that need to be answered like "find someone that has a big dog", you might have to use pictures instead since they all might not be reading, and have them go around and ask kids if they have what ever it is. Then that kid has to write his/her name on the line next to it.

You could have questions like, who has only sisters or only brothers?
Who went on a vacation this summer?
Who has a blue car?

I am not a teacher but lots of former girl scouting stuff...I think with me, I would do something with being alphabetical. Line them up or group them somehow.

Then have the A's remember the S's or something. I don't know...but when you do groups you can create "games".

Or have them sound off and then someone has to pick out the A's to the middle and then when they think they did it the kids tell their name.
