Help: Need Cocktail Dress

White House Black Market! I just bought two black dresses there yesterday! They have fabulous quality dresses and the fit, on most items, is pretty true to size. If you look at their sale webpage they have several dresses priced from $29.99 to $79.99. They will graciously accept returns in the store as well! I can't say enough good things about this store! :thumbsup2

Busty women (I'm 34G - naturally) look better in v-necklines.

I would go for the dress first. Less worrying involved than if skirt/shirt/pants work well together.

Any of the department stores usually have OODLES of dresses marked down this time of year.

If you try thrift stores...don't give up if you don't find something at the first store. Sometimes it takes me a while to find something...luckily there are many around me.

Or craigslist. Put something in the clothes section with what you're looking for. There are bound to be a few like-busted women who are looking through there who might have what you need.

Since it sounds like you don't have one, here's anothe vote for a little black dress. I think every woman should have one in her closet.

Another option is a skirt or pair of black dressy pants and sparkly top. I'm built similarly to you and I find that separates fit me best.

I have a pair of these: http://www.dressbarn.com/detail/chiffon-palazzo-pants/100155968/10

that I pair with a dressy top (I watch the sales and have several to pick from now). Something like this: http://www.dressbarn.com/detail/chiffon-faux-pearl-applique-top/101384563/101 or this: http://www.dressbarn.com/detail/metallic-jacket-and-tank-duet/101365647/153

I bought the pants on the clearance rack for $20 and got the tops from $15 - $20.

Yes! I love White House Black Market....great dresses.

Don't forget some sexy shoes to give it that extra "pow". :p

I don't know how much time you have but this is my current favorite shopping experience. You can buy "rack size" for a reasonable price (most of their outfits are under $100) or for an additional $7.50 you can order a customized version

Basically you enter your measurements and they make the dress to fit you. You can also do things like ask them to change the length of the skirt or add sleeves to a sleeveless dress.

As you can see, they offer a huge range of sizes too ....

I was in one of my local consignment stores last week and noticed a HUGE section devoted to cocktail dresses. I would start in thrift and consignment stores, then work my way over to discount stores like TJ Maxx & Ross. My boss bought a FABULOUS black cocktail dress for $9 at Ross last month.

Do you have Macy's where you live? That is usually our go to place to dresses, along with Nordstrom. Target has some cute spring dresses - I don't know if they are dressy enough for you.

Do you have Platos' Closet? It is a consignment shop for teen wear - you might find a prom/cocktail type dress that would work.

I haven't been in Dress Barn for years, but a friend just bought several dresses there for spring.

I agree about Macys. I got a black cocktail dress for a cruise and it was $10. I also like Dress Barn. Not sure the dresses there will be dressy enoughand I have found White House?Black Market to be expensive. By the way I would wear a dress instead of slacks

I think Kohls is the way to go! I get my formal Christmas dress there every year. Google for a Promo Code and Free shipping. Read the reviews. You won't be sorry.

I'm surprised I haven't seen this mentioned, but I would certainly try Ebay, especially if you have a brand you like and know fits you well, its a great source. My niece got a couple of dresses at Ross, she really liked so I started searching Ebay for that line, and found some really great deals.

This, I am 4'11", size 12 and 34F bra size. I have a short neck and a round face so v-necks are flattering and make my neck look longer.

I love wrap dresses - they help hide my tummy and offer a better fit. I always have a hard time with dresses because of my chest. I have a black wrap dress that I bought on clearance at Belks for $15 this past November. I wore it to my husbands office Christmas party and to my Grandmother's funeral. I just changed the shoes and jewelry.

I also always have great luck at Ross - but more so in the juniors section.

Thank you everyone! I am going out dress hunting tomorrow! Great suggestions from everyone...We have pretty much every store where I live (WHBM, Nordstrom, Dress Barn, etc...) so I will probably be out all day! :) I totally forgot about checking Kohl's. It's usually hit or miss there but I'm sure I can find something somewhere.

Thank you all again!

Another suggestion for a little black dress. I have one that I can wear to anything with the right jewelry and shoes. I can wear it for work, weddings, a nice dinner out, funerals...seriously. It has never failed me.

Dress Barn. You can even check their website before going to the store to see if anything you like.
