Ok,
My wife's family is planning on staying in their mega motorhome at Ft Wilderness. What hotel makes the most sense for me and my wife to book for ourselves from a transportation perspective or does it really matter? My wife wants to have easy access to her family....

Here are our options as I see them:

1. Rent a car thereby making my issue moot.
2. Stay at the Wilderness lodge and take a boat (Does this make sense if I am just trying to get to and from Ft. Wilderness?. Will we have to go to and from the MK as part of the trip?)
3. Stay at the Contemporary and take a boat. (I think there is one right?)
4????

As I type, I think renting the car makes the most sense, but I thought I would look to the board's collective wisdom...

Thanks...

You could stay in the FW cabins. The WL and Contempory are both good choices because FW can be reached by boat. There is a walking path between the WL and FW. Hope this helps

Thanks. I did not realize that there was a walking path!!...steve c

You may want to find out how long of a wlk it is between the WL & FW. I've heard it can be a trek, but I'm really not sure.

If you drive, you may have to park in the main FW lot & take an internal bus, unless they are renting a golf cart. There may not be room on their site for an extra vehicle. The people on the camping board would know the rules. Just something (else) to think about :)

The WL also shares some buses with FW. The boat ride from WL to FW is a pleasant trip. DW and I walked from WL to FW and it took about 20 minutes.

I have heard the walking path is 3/4 of a mile. When we walked it we took it slow as there was some wildlife to watch and it took us about 20 minutes.

My DH and DSs walked the path from WL to Ft. Wild. one evening. I remember them saying that the path is NOT lighted. They took the bus back.

According to the Laughing Place'sTransportation Calculator, and my own experience, the Contemporary is your best bet. The Boat to FW is slightly faster from the CR to to FW than the boat or bus to FW from WL. CR also offers more dining options, bigger rooms, and better transportation than WL. Of course, I love them both, so you really can't go wrong. The rental car, however, isn't a very good idea; you'd have to park in the main parking lot and take an internal bus. It would probably end up taking longer than just about any other form of internal transportation.

The path is a little more than a mile between WL and FW (there is a mile marker along the trail that marks 1 mile about an eight of a mile from the end of the path). It is not lit.

Thanks for all the responses. My first choice would be the Contemporary... I just have to hope some codes start showing up!!... steve c

We stayed at the Comt. Our dd was 2.5 at the time. It is a wonderful hotel, anc very accessable to almost anything in the park. If you have small children, the monorail access is terrific.

We are staying at WL this time. Our dd will be 4.5.

I'm sure you will have a wonderful trip wherever you stay.

I would rent a car no matter what or where I was staying. We usually drive but when we do fly I don't like wasting time on the bus system so we do rent. It's not much more expensive than Meers shuttle back and forth both ways.

And, good news for you. You can boat to FW from WL but you can also walk or bike. There's a fun trail between the two!

If you are thinking about walking to FW from WL you might want to take into consideration that once you get to FW there is still a good walk to the side of FW where the motorhome sites are located. You could take an internal bus once you get to FW.

Another option is to rent bikes too. Dh and I loved to do this when we stayed at WL in the past and then ride around the FW area.

We love to visit FW when we stay at the WL. I feel like it's an extension of the resort:p

I love the cabins! And then you could rent a golf cart to tootle over to visit! (love that, too!) In the cabins, you'd be able to cook, too, if that's your thing. My kind of "roughing it". :teeth:

I think it actually depends on what boat you get on as to how long it would be. One boat goes from CR - FW - WL while I think another runs from CR - WL - FW.

My first choice would be a cabin at FW & then either the WL or the CR. The path from WL to FW is not lighted, but is a nice walk during the day. Also, it may take you just as long on a boat as it would an internal bus to get to your in-laws place inside FW - you could also walk to their motor home if you stay in FW though. There is so much to do in FW & that is why it would be my first choice.

Even if you stayed at another resort & had a car, you can only park in the main lot at FW & then take an internal bus to their "loop".

Again, I think the most convenient & best choice would be to stay right at FW - JMO though!! :p
