Do you think I need to take her to the vet? I really don't need this expense right now, but I want to take her if I need to. Has anyone had this experience?

It was a piece of foil maybe a foot long. She didn't eat all of it. She just chewed on it and ate the parts that had food stuck on it. She's large for a bichon, but not a huge dog. She does have a cast-iron stomach. She's known for pulling stupid tricks like this.

I have!! Give her till morning or when she normally would have a bm. If it is not there you might want to take her. My dog ate it when my niece crumpled up a huge piece like a ball and threw it and she swallowed it whole!! She needed surgery but they feel it was because it was the size of a tennis ball! And her bowel just was not able to pass it. If it was chewed and flatened out or shreded she might have been able to pass it. Good luck :)

There were shreds on the floor, so I think she chewed it up. It was all in pieces.

Anyone else have experience with this?

My friend suggested mixing petroleum jelly with her food to help her pass it. Ewwww. That sounds really messy to me.

I saw your next post I bet she will be able to pass it. Just keep an eye on her and check her (well you know) and if she start's to act funny at all like depressed or just diff. from her normal self, if she does then take her to the vet.

My little beagle did the same thing. They were little pieces shredded up. He was able to pass it the next morning. But I did keep an eye on him just in case.

From time to time, our dogs get a chocolate egg wrapped in foil from a kid dropping....the first time we flipped out because chocolate can be fatal to some breeds.

They've always passed the foil fine.

Our youngest Bichon has eaten many things. Sometimes we don't even know until he either coughs them up or poops. I'd keep an eye on her BM's and eating for a few days until you know she has passed at least most of it. Since it wasn't big pieces it probably will pass.

You could put mineral oil or corn oil on her food to help lubricate her. We top dress all our horses feed with rice bran oil just to keep things running smoothly. The vet also will give mineral oil through a naso/gastric tube to help any intestinal blockages they do it for horses and he did for my foil dog! Hoping it would help her.

Thanks everyone. I'm feeling better. I still can't believe she did that. I've had my dogs eat weird things, but never foil.

I wouldn't worry!!!! They can eat things that we would never imagine and come out fine. My very healthy 10 year old Shepherd ate our couch (well 3/4 of it) when she was a puppy and lived to let us tell the tale.

She has eaten garbage can loads of nonos and I guess they've come out the other end. We have a couple of acres so I don't have to watch when she goes. :rotfl2:

I also had a mixed breed that ate stones. Four times had her stomach pumped because they were blocking her anal canal and she couldn't use it to go. The stones wouldn't pass through, but she was fine, too. Dogs are total whack jobs -- just like husbands. Can't live with them and definitely don't want to live without them. :teeth:

I really wouldn't be too concerned. Their insides are totally different than ours and process the most unusual things just fine. Just keep an eye on her pixiedust:

When DH's Rottweiler ate ant traps  and left only the poison control center number (I SWEAR) from the cardboard box, the guy said to feed her half a loaf of bread to give her enough fiber to push the plastic through. Try that, but with a Bichon I'd say 2 or 3 slices would be plenty.

FYI, I was not worried about the effect of the plastic. The dog ate linoleum and soda cans, so plastic was the least of it!!

I remember hearing about bread too. You can even dip it in milk because milk also helps them go. If your dog has no trouble eating the bread, substitute the milk in her water bowl.

Our dog swallowed one of those packets of Arby's Horsey sauce whole. And we saw it again in a couple of days ;)

She ate the bread like it was a real treat. I guess it was dessert. I think she's feeling great. She's anxiously watching DD, because it's time for dinner. She doesn't show any signs of distress.
