This is so my luck ...........

I just bought a Canon Powershot SD700IS. I love it.... I was in the grocery store getting groceries and I had the camera in a side pocket inside my purse. My purse was sitting on the "shelf" where you write checks (okay, hindsight, that was stupid), but the cashier reached over my purse to reset the debit machine and my purse tipped over and the camera hit the floor. At first glance, it looked okay and there was a long line behind me, so I quickly exited. I took it out to play with it at lunch today and I notice that the seam in the front of the camera is pulled apart a little and there is a little tiny pc of metal sticking out, almost holding it apart? The camera seems to work fine, it has a few scratches on it, which I can live with, but I worry about water or moisture getting inside the camera. I leave in 14 days for Disney, the whole reason I bought this camera. I got on line and went to the Canon service centers and there is nothing in my area, the closest is 585 miles from me!!! I don't have time to send this to Canon for a repair...........

I found a place in Webster (not too far from my home) that I called and they will look at it for me. Does this sound like an easy fix? I guess I am just looking for some reassurance here :confused3 I can't beleive my new camera is damaged already. :headache:

I will let you all know how I make out.

If it is working fine, then it probably is not damaged. Try taking a shot of something that you had already shot before the drop and compare the shots to see if anything looks funny. Try to have the settings and situation as close as possible to the original shot. No matter what, I would call and speak to the manager of the store ASAP. This was not your fault and if it is damaged they should pay for the inspection and any needed repairs.

Hi Kevin,

Thanks, that is a good idea to compare a picture taken previously to one taken after the fall. I am going to do that when I get home from work tonight.

I guess I will take it to the repair shop and see what they say. If it is minor, I won't bother notifying the store. It was an "accident" and I wouldn't want to get the young cashier in trouble, especially if it is a minor fix.

Thanks again, and I will make sure I post how I made out.

you can call canon usa ( number is on the website) and speak with tech support.they have been pretty helpful with my lens woes and probably could tell you if it is cosmetic or something that needs fixed...although i know the first thing they ask is if you dropped it but it doesn't sound like you were figuring the warranty would cover it.

I'd try taking shots at different focal lengths and apertures. When my camera took a spill at the MK, it seemed OK at first. Later in the day, I noticed that the lens lost the ability to focus more than about 15 feet away when zoomed out.

This one of those very rare times it is good if you had been talked into buying insurance by the salesman. If you have it, take it back to the store.

Ah... so you were in Wegmans and the cashier reset the ICOT terminal, eh? ;) (Actually, I don't think they're called ICOTs any more...) If there is damage caused by the cashier, Wegmans will probably cover it, they're generally extremely good about customer service (that's why they're considered the best grocery store in the country, if not the world.) But you may be at a disadvantage if you didn't report it right then to customer service.

If the seams aren't quite lined up, I'd probably lean towards giving it a little "squeeze" to see if it can pop back together. Often when something looks like that, some of the little plastic pieces inside may have come apart and are not lined up right, a little bit of massaging will get it to pop closed again, probably as good as before.

I took my camera to Rowe Audio and Video (in Webster~ Groucho~ I am sure you have heard of this store). I have never been to them but what great service and nice store!

I took it in and I guess a small pc of the frame inside had broke off and that was the piece that was preventing the case from closing properly. They fiddled with it with some tools for about 10 minutes and *poof* my camera was fixed. They even took some pictures with it and said it was good as new. Less a few minor scratches from the fall.

They wouldn't take any $$$ from me either. I tried to give them something because I appreciated it so much, but they said it was a minor repair. Wow. I will definately be going back there to makes some purchases. They have great camera bags etc.

Groucho ~ yes it was Wegmans :goodvibes which I absolutely love, and I wanted to see what the damage was before I spoke with them. All is well again. I need to find case for this camera. They didn't have one there or I would have purchased it.

Thanks again everyone.
