Help, MIL is on FB and wants to be my friend...

... And this is why I prefer to remain as web-dead as possible. :thumbsup2

It's so nice not to ever have to deal with these sort of dilemmas.

This is why I have a fake name on Facebook.

If you can figure it out, then you deserve to be my friend. :rotfl:

I talk my friends through this all the time! If you have more than one person you don't want seeing certain things on your page, set up a group for them.

Click on Friends, then All Friends (at top of page).
On the left-hand side, it says Lists. Click on +Create to make a list and name it whatever you want.
Now just click on the friends you want on this list.

Now to hide things from that group, click on Settings, then Privacy Settings (at top of page)
Go through the different sections and do this for everything you don't want that group seeing:
Profile: Click on one of the drop down lists where it says Networks and Friends.
Click on Customize
When the box pops up, it'll say Except These People - now type in the name of that group.

Do that for your wall posts, comments, friends, things like that. Now that group won't see these things you've hidden from them.

You can also use this group to look like you are offline all the time on chat.

Hope this helps!

OMG I can do this to my boss!! YES!!!:lmao:

Exactly what I do! An old classmate of mine friended me - excpet I think she forgot that she used to BULLY ME! I accepted and gave her extremely limited access to my info. Didn't want to just ignore her, cause she already saw that I was chatting frequently with a group of our other classmates. She, and some other people are all on the same limited access grouping.

Wait can any of this stop someone from getting updates on THEIR pages about what I'm doing?

Just so you know.. it's against facebook policy to have a fake name. They will cancel your account with no warning.

I'm not trying to be facebook police.. just thought you'd want to know.

She wasn't my MIL but I had a DNiece who is only 15 request friendship. I wrote her a note in FB and explained that just as there are things that she and her friends talk about that it is probably better off me not knowing and want to keep private there are many things my friends and I talk about that she is better off not knowing. She wrote me back saying thank you and she totally understood.

Maybe your MIL would understand?

I would also do the same with my boss. I would explain my work life and home life are totally separate. Though we are work friends my personal life is very different. If I want to show him pictures I will up load them so he can see them or e-mail them to him.

JMO. :)

I think there's a big difference between a web savvy teen and a MIL. :lmao:

I've noticed that a lot of older adults seem to do the same drama as the kids with the "so and so unfriended me! WHY???" and "I'm blocking her, she really ticked me off. That'll show her." :rotfl:

Yeah, isn't that strange? There was an older girl in school who tormented me mercilessly and made my life a living hell. She sent me a friend request and I was just like, geez, does she even KNOW? :confused3 How bizarre.

There are a few settings that will allow you to pick and choose certain friends who can see things. I do that for things like photos -- like if I have embarrassing photos of me and my friends, I'll just set it up for just them to see that particular album. LOL

Personally, if there were just a few people I didn't want seeing certain things (like some family members), I'd do the "except these people." But if there were just a few people I DO want seeing certain things, I'd do the "only certain friends."

Does that make sense?

Thanks!
