Help me with Skylanders, please.

We have Spyro's adventure and many of the the original figures, plus a few Giants. My son now wants Swap Force. I need to get a new portal for the characters. Will any of the old figures work on the new portal? What about an app for the ipad. Does this require a special portal? Do I need all new characters for the app? What a MONEY MAKER this is!!!

I know the old characters work on the new Swap Force portal but the new swap force characters will not work on the old plain Skylanders portal. You do need to buy the new Swap Force starter kit with the new portal etc.

Also check the packaging of each character. It will show either a green check mark or red x by each system (original, giants, and swap force) to indicate which system(s) the figure works on.

As noted, you need to buy the starter kit with the Swap Force portal. All of the old characters work with the Swap portal.

If you have any of the Skylanders games for iPad you do not need a portal. You can manually enter the code from the card packaged with the Skylanders character to use that Skylander in the game.

For the Swap Force game, you will need to buy some swappable characters. These are the expensive ones ($14.00 +) which can swap tops and bottoms. Some of these are Boom Jet, Hoot Loop, Rattle Shake, etc. If you look at the packages, on the bottom right they all have a symbol, Rocket, Bounce, Teleporter, etc. Try and get different ones, because you need these to open up different areas in the levels.

You can also tell by the bottoms of them what game they are for.

Spyro's Adventure = Green
Giants = Orange
SwapForce = Blue

I am really disappointed how easily the SwapForce characters that can be swapped come apart. I can already see DS8 losing part of one before Valentine's Day!
