Help me understand importance of UY...

We own points at OKW with a Feb. UY. We are considering adding on points at BWV, and I am trying to understand more about how UY comes into play. The reason we would buy points at BWV is b/c in Utah we have a school vacation in Oct., and I know that is a peak time b/c of F&W. So, if we will mostly go in Oct., which UY would be best?

The biggest thing with UY is banking and borrowing.

If you go in OCT most of the time and have to cancel you may not be able to bank 100% of your points at that time as it will be out of your 6 month window .

the problem you will run into is, unless you buy a resale, is Disney will sell you the same use year you already have. If you vacation regularly in October ,an August, September or October use year is ideal.

The use year is basically important for your travel habits. If you normally vacation is spring or summer - you would want March or April use year, due to the fact if something comes up and you have to bank them, you can then bank 100 percent of your points. If you look at it if you had a Oct. use year and again you vacation in the summer, then something again would come up you could bank the points. But only a small percentage of the points.

Keep in mind that if you buy a totally different use year (via resale, since Disney won't sell you a different use year), is that they become two totally different contracts. Points cannot be combined in any way for making reservations or to determine banking amounts.

The two contracts would be as separate from each other as your current contract is totally separate from mine.

Finally Use Year doesn't really mean anything if you don't cancel your reservations. It only comes into play if you cancel a reservation and the points are returned to your account but it is too late to bank them.

You do realize, I hope, that if you purchase points at BWV, only those points can be used to make a reservation at 8-11 months ahead. You could not use the OKW points for that BWV vacation until the 7-month point. So if your purpose is to have BWV as a home resort, be sure you understand this.
