Right now we have 150 points which allows us 2 stays/year in studios. However, our family is expanding and I am afraid studios will become to small.

So we are thinking of adding on 75 points which would be around $7500. I am trying to rationalize this purchase.

I know we could continue to squeeze into a studio and be just fine. I am unsure about putting all my vacation eggs in disney's basket.

Can anyone help through how they made the decision to add on or NOT add on!!

I know I could go half as much, but honestly don't want to!! I would rather be miserable in a studio 2x/year than only go once!

Since when do we need to rationalize? I think "because I really, really want it" will do it.:rotfl2: Actually, after a few visits you should be getting a feel for how you like Disney and your future needs. If you can afford it, you could add on a little at a time and 75 points is a nice place to start. Good luck with your decision. :)

We have a family of 5 and initially bought in with 200 points at AKV. Within the next 12 months we:

bought resale at BCV for 100 pts
bought 2 25 point add ons at AKV
added on another 50 at BCV

We now have a total of 400 points. Our rationale was simple....we love Disney! Some things are better not to think about and just do (if you can afford it). We vacation often and love the flexibility DVC offers, we looked around at other timeshares after our initial purchase and found that DVC was the best deal going.

thanks disers! Sometimes I over think things and second guess spending money on something when I could be saving it or doing other things. But Disney with my family makes me happy!!

I guess with rising fuel and everything else, I am a little scared to commit more money and time to disney. Especially when we could just squeeze into a studio for now. But those one br's look awfully nice!!!

Not sure which resort you own, but would a 50 point add on be enough to get you a bigger unit?

We bought in a long time ago with 310 points. Added 90. Added 100. Added 100. I am now looking to add another 100. Trust me--you will use it and you will be glad you did. As the kids get older the larger accomodiations are a must, not a luxury. If your vacation dollars are safe anywhere it is with Disney...the prices only go up and the quality never ceases. Start enjoying it now.

Thanks everybody for all your help!! We decided to bite the bullet and add 100, so we don't have to do it for awhile!!:rotfl:

I wouldn't put this ahead of paying off credit cards or cars, but if you've got the cash and can afford it, go for it!

We have 250 points now but I am sensing that we will have to add on additional points soon. Our vacations include family and now friends! We either need to convince them to buy points or we will have to do an add on soon! At least it sounds like a good excuse! :yay:

It depends on how much time you spend in your room & what you do there.

Do you like to cook while on vacation or is the micro & fridge enough?

Do you like the convenience of doing some laundry?

Do you like to lounge in the room or is it just a place to crash?

Do you envision bringing other people w/ you to WDW in the future?

We own 250 points. We stay in studios mostly but for longer trips since w/ airfare we tend to go less frequently. When we we're in the room we're usually asleep. If we are back at the resort the kids don't want to hang in the room, they want to be at the pool. DH & I sometimes take turns taking the kids to the pool so the other can have some down time.

The only reason I would add on any more would be to get the 11 month booking window at resort I'd like such as AKL or BCV.

On our next trip we'll stay in a studio 4 nights & then switch resorts to 1 bedroom so we can do some laundry & relax a little more in the room. I love having the jacuzzi tub. That's our compromise so we don't blow through too many points.

Good luck whatever you decide. Did you see the email from DVC about $8 off AKL or $10 off SSR & you only have to add 50 points?

We are a family of 5 now but bought when were were a family of 4. We also have 150 points. Our rational was a little different. I bought with the intention of staying in a 1br 7 days a year with a short trip factored in with a little borrowing/banking. Or stay in a 2br every other year for 7 nights. Honestly, if I was you and had the money--without having to borrow or finance, I'd get just enough get that 1br. Like said above, that could be as little as a 50 pt add on. With 200pts you could do a 1br for a week during Adventure or Choice season for under 200pts or Thanksgiving week (another example) for 6 nights.

Good luck with your decision! I am pretty sure once you stay in a 1br, you won't go back to a studio with 5 ppl!

Thanks for all of your advice. I talked to our guide and if we buy 100 pts now at ssr, we would get 2007 pts, 2008 pts, 500 gift card, prorated mf's for 2008 and $10 off!!

That sounds great to me. I was thinking that would give us 250 pts. Enough for 2 trips/year in a 1 br if we stay studio fri/sat. We love going twice a year and would only add on if it helped to do that. If we find out that the 1 br is not a neccesity, then we can just stay in studios for longer!!!

Thanks again!

I am going to sound like a spoiled brat, but I don't like to be uncomfortable on vacation. I don't like to "squueze" into a room and so forth.

It's vacation...DH & I work very hard, as do most people, so on vacation, we like to be able to relax, enjoy, even be pampered a little.

Not to mention the fact that if you have more than 4 people in your family, you can't stay in most of the studios. I think AKL has 5 person studios, but I think the rest of the properties are 4 people studios... you can put a 5th person in there if they are pack & play size.

I love the sound of that! And that is exactly what it came down to us in deciding to buy. There isn't really a "good reason" to buy. We really really want to go to Disney every year is a good enough reason for me!:goodvibes

I bought enough points for 2 trips a year , one in a one bedroom, the other in a studio. This also allows me to use the points every third year for a cruise. I have 350 points. 160, 65, 50 50 , and a 25. as years go on when I do not need all the points , if that happens, I can sell the smaller contracts easily. I bought enough for the one bedroom mainly for the washer and dryer, and a little for the kitchen. I believe that you buy where you like to stay. I felt the minimum points may not be able to give enough flexibility.
